Had this car for 6 years and last 6 months have experienced a very, almost inaudable, quiet 'tinkling', like pre-ignition of old. Happens only when high gear, low speed, throttle 'tickled'. Serviced recently and although advised of problem they didn't find anything. Ditched supermarket petrol for Shell, no difference. Could of course move down a gear but what's the problem? Local driving 5 miles and 2 x 200 mile m'way blast 2x's a year, could this be the problem?

Leaking exhaust manifold gasket or slight exhaust leak.

What about the knock sensor?

Have you tried a higher octane fuel such as Shell Vpower or Tesco greenenergy

Shall try the Shell exclusively as Tesco not hereabouts. Although saying that have the half tank of Shell in now and no difference. Maybe changing down is the answer if no other solution. As I do very little mileage could that be the problem? Or are modern petrol/oils so good?

Thanks anyway.

Could be coking up due to the short journeys and that could be your root cause. Especially if you use very low revs.

Use VPower for a few tanks and try a couple of italian tunes. Try a few more revs.
