I have a neighbour who is a VERY annoying trader-without-premises. Basically, he buys cars at the local auction, chavs them up a bit and then flogs them off in (I presume) Autotrader.

He usually has about 6+ cars abandoned in various places around our estate, so every time he abandons one near my house (especially if he blocks by normal parking spot) without a tax disc on it, I take great pleasure in phoning the local nick to report him!

Amusingly, this week he abandoned a Jeep Cherokee and I dutifuly reported it to the old bill. Minutes later they old bill phoned back and asked me to check the registration number. I did and it was as I had previously advised them.

Here's the amusing part:

NOT ONLY HAD IT GOT NO TAX, IT WAS ON FALSE NUMBER PLATES!!!!!

How I laughed as the police took it away!

Quite right too. Uninsured cars and drivers are a menace.

There is a difference between untaxed, uninsured cars being driven or abbandoned by some lowlife and untaxed cars being parked temporarily by someone who lives around, especially if you know who that person is. Reporting abandonned tax vehicles is your duty, ratting temporarily parked car in instead of asking the guy to move it IMHO is just mean.

No, it's not mean. He's a serial offender.

>>to move it IMHO is just mean.>>

Absolutely nothing mean in it whatsoever - highly commendable in fact.

Any vehicle on the road, parked for a period or otherwise, has to be properly taxed and insured; if left off-road for more than a month (IIRC) then the DVLA has to be advised and an SORN acquired.

My neighbour used to do exactly the same thing - own three or four vehicles and never tax, MOT or insure any of them.

Speaking to him generally had no effect so I use to report him to the DVLA (eventually an e-mail facility was established making it even easier) and he rightly gone done on several occasions.

It took some time for the message to get home with this neighbour but now all his vehicles are properly taxed and insured.

You might have a different view of such activities if a vehicle driven by an uninsured driver hit yours and you discovered just how difficult, frustrating and time consuming it is to get compensation.

Good stuff man. I think it's important people report such vehicles - they are a nuisance and anti-social. Usually other offences come to light - but in this occasion alls fair and lvoe and war my man. Glad the local COnstabulary were able to shine on this one :)

Im not plain stupid, just a special kind of stoopid.

Everyone else manages to pay tax - why not him?

>>ratting temporarily parked car in instead of asking the guy to move it IMHO is just mean.<<

Didn't he say the car was on false plates too?

Good for you! Too many people whine about this sort of thing not being taking seriously enough but can't be bothered to take the action you did.

False plates eh? Makes you wonder what else this guy may have been up to in his spare time.

A serial offender eh? Good to see the usual deterrents are working so well then - NOT!

Our local Constabulary has a policy ! If the local Beat Officer, PCSO or Traffic Officer comes accross an untaxed car, they phone a DVLA hotline, which confirms that the car is a bad 'un, it then gets towed away...btill. The reason that mobile phones were invented surely.
