  I read in the French press that tourists, doctors, lawyers and the handicapped enjoy "automatic leniency" when it somes to speeding. Has any user of The Back Room ever been "done" for speeding in France? Certainly, the police there are seldom to be seen on the roads.

  Just done the booze cruise, I was given a do and don't leaflet. ''You must have dipped headlights on at all times now'' it said. It didn't seem to apply to the French though as not many seemed to obey that rule! Vive La France!

  A warning for those travelling abroad. France now requires one Hi-Viz vest for every occupant of cars on the autoroute - a requirement not covered by the information pack provided by our lease company. Luckily I need them for work so we had the requisite number in the car.
