just recieved three fines from France stating I owed 144 Euros for each offence, this is the first I have heard about it and the fines look like they have been increased. What can I do as I have never recieved any notification before about it

No idea if the French authorities can collect fines by legal means from this country, if they cannot maybe you can just ignore it and feel smug.

But if they can and you were on the roads you were alledgedly caught on then you need to pay up ASAP.

As for the future, slow down. The limits are there for good reasons.

I am not sure of the current legal status about collecting fines in the UK which have been incurred in foreign countries. I wonder if the UK does it to Europeans? Anyway maybe' Pepipoo' website may be able to help. I think the current dodge for European authorities is to 'sell' the fines(they are not debts until guilt has been proven or admitted) to debt collecting companies in the UK. They then try the heavy handed stuff and usual intimidation tactics. They are fairly easy to defeat if you have not been convicted and I think they are on very shaky ground legally in the UK, so I would be inclined to ignore them. I also think that a UK solicitor would not be much use advising on French traffic law. You need advice from someone who has been through this particular mill. Bets of luck and keep us informed. Quite a few of us drive through France regularly so we would be interested in the outcome. Sorry not to be able to help.

EU legislation now exists that traffic penalties in an EU country can now be collected or persued for vehicles that are registered in another EU country.

If the 'ticket' was issued via a camera ie not given directly to the driver, then it will take some time for the registered owner to receive the notice.

Thought the UK had opted out of that?

Was the vehicle that was alleged to have committed the offence a hire car or your own vehicle ?

Does the paperwork you have received look like the Avis de Contravention here?

This site can be read by right clicking and using google translate.
