I took it back to the formentioned reptutable garage and the problem has now turned out to be a knackered ECU, which they are wanting the best part of £1500 to replace...parts and labour My question is, do I have any rights as a consumer to question/claim the garage as liable for the damage

  Is it true that cars 57 and onwards cannot be jump started, and if they are you risk a very large bill for a new ecu. I have heard stories of upto £5k. I don't know how true this is. What technical reason could there be for a jump start blowing the ecu?
