Hope someone can give us some advice on this. The symbol for engine electronics appeared and there was a loss of steering power on the car so we pulled off the road and phoned rescue service. The car wouldn't start so they tried to jump start it. The rescue guy then announced that our car had "Fried" his van and that wouldn't start! I'm not sure what this meant but he had to call for a low loader to take my car home.and go back to rescue him!!

We charged the battery overnight and the car started the next day and the warning light had gone out. Took it for a short run and all seemed fine but we were a bit worried that it would happen again so we drove it to the garage and left it to get looked at.

Phoned us to say it was the ECU which needed replacing and the option was to have a second hand one which would be guaranteed for six months and cost approx £650 or a new one guaranteed for 12 months costing £850 plus vat. The car is 13 years old but it has only done 67000 miles and is ln great condition so I'd like to know whether it is worth getting the new ECU fitted. About a year ago one of the windows was left open and a lot of water got in. One of the electric windows wont open so would that be corrected if a new ECU was fitted. As you can see neither of us has a clue about car mechanics. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

This is all very confusing . You say that the power steering failed and the car wouldn’t start. This sounds like a battery or alternator fault . Not sure what Ecu the mechanic is referring to , but there’s possibly 10 on this car .

Thanks for your reply. We've decided to go ahead and let the garage repair it and take a chance that it will solve the problem. At least with a 12 month guarantee if the fault recurs in this time we should be covered. Sorry for the confusing post but I am clueless when it comes to mechanics and my husband is worse than me. both late seventies so a bit old to learn new tricks now.

With a 13-year-old car. only you can decide whether 'it is worth' getting it fixed. Before the recent incident, if you liked the car and had been expecting to keep it running for the foreseeable, then probably yes. If you had been considering changing it, perhaps no, except to trade in a working vehicle. Don't just compare the cost of repair with the car's 'value' - it's an easy comparison but it doesn't mean a lot.

I’m a little concerned that the garage is going to replace the engine Ecu . This will not fix the power steering issue nor the electric window fault .

But it will fix their cash flow problem!

Fried ECU? Bit worrying if a a recovery man doesn't know how to jump start a car properly.

In a small retail park near me, a guy with a Porsche Cayenne asked me for a jump start - he had the cables as mate with a van had tried and failed. I politely declined on the basis of a dentist appointment (a lie), as I wasn't having the electrics on an expensive BMW frazzled.
