Volkswagen Polo (2005 - 2009)
1.4 S TDI (70ps) 5dr Hatchback
Reliable and economical
I actually own to 80ps 1.4 TDI and not the 70 (Option not in the list).
I've owned this car from new and have had VERY little issues with it. It now has 80,000 on the clock and the drive is still as good as when I bought it and its very well made. The 1.4 TDI delivers economically and also has enough grunt around town. Ok...its a polo and it wasn't designed for long motorway drives, however a 3 hour journey on the M6 is not uncomfortable and the car performs well.
Issues within the 3 years to watch out for.
1. Water in the integrated indicator/wing mirror. This was replaced by VW under warranty, however as they are heated, these can be quite expensive to buy.
2. Heater coil broke after 4 years. Not that expensive to replace but test the heater before buying.
3. Tyres unevenly wearing on the back (ongoing and known issue apparently)
Other than that if you can get one with low milage, full service the 80ps TDI is an ideal first car. The standard S unfortunately has very limited kit and I fitted mine with couple of extras, including 16" Varano alloy wheels, metallic paint and alarm.
I'd aim for SE or special editions to try and get more for your money.
