Volkswagen Golf R (2014 - 2020)
2.0 TSI 300ps R DSG6 4Motion 5dr Hatchback
Sophisticated and understated Super Hatch that still knows how to party
Traded in a BMW 3 Series E90 for something fun, yet practical. This ticks all those boxes and then some!
The car is basically a top-end MK7 GTI on steroids but it can still be driven like a normal car, the GTI can sometimes seem a little too tightly wound and too keen to get you in trouble.
The good
* 300bhp (or near enough) through 4 wheels - not many road conditions it cant handle - but it's no Off-Roader.
* Understated and if not pushed, drives like a standard golf, but much more surefooted.
* Cheap to service at a VW dealer - Brakes and Suspension cost extra, but this is only checked on a full service and brakes last a long time (provided you aren't doing track days every weekend).
* When pushed, you'll be breathing down the neck of that BMW or Porsche screaming down the fast lane.
* Power delivery is very linear and builds rather than coming on in spurts, it's quick (especially above 7000RPM) so it's predictable and won't come as a nasty surprise.
The Bad
* The 4Motion 4WD system is heavy so this can blunt some of the performance against something like a Focus RS or a Megane RS.
* 4WD system is underneath the boot so you lose some boot space compared to the GTI, moreso if you have a full sized spare wheel.- but not too much.
* The looks can be a bit TOO subtle. it looks like any other standard Golf to most people (with some styling tweaks belying the performance) -but those in the know will know what you have though!
* What kind of tyres you choose are VERY important on this car - it really needs top end rubber to make the most of the car - Continental SportContact or Michelin PilotSport series are the best choice for this car, but you'll really notice the benefit of the extra money spent.
* Windscreens seem thinner and more prone to cracks if it picks up a stonechip - make sure you have Windscreen cover in your insurance - seems to be a VW thing.
In summary -
A subtle but quick family hatch that is equally at home carrying the family as it is blasting down the country roads. It's no track car but not many cars on the road can give you this mix of performance and practicality - this is a fun daily driver, rather than a out and out performance car.
