Vauxhall Vectra (2002 - 2008)
2.2 DTI SRI
Comfortable mile muncher
When I bought this car I wasn't sure if the engine was too big for good economy but I was surprised when on a motorway trip to Devon that it returned 55mpg at speeds of 70-90mph!! which means over 500 miles to the tankful. It's not so good around town where it only returns around 39-42mpg. It is very comfortable to travel in (except the rear middle seat, which is a c******r after 100miles or so) it has a good size boot and a pretty high spec interior. We have had very little trouble with it up until last september when the crank pulley sheard off, I'm told this is a common problem because there are two pulleys bonded to a rubber cush drive and it perishes. This was a VERY expensive job- £325 but if I had taken it to a Vauxhall dealer they would have charged £677 inc vat!!!!! I can honestly say that it is one of the best cars I have ever had and have only one real issue with it- that silly, silly indicator stem! it's so annoying when you don't know if it's going to stay on or cancel because it is a self returning stem and doesn't stay in the up or down position- a light touch and you indicate for 3 flashes (excellent on the m/way) and a harder press for a longer indication BUT, if your steering wheel is slightly turned then you will only get 3 flashes and you'll stop indicating when you most need it- halfway through your turn. It's also worth mentioning that there was a recall on the handbrake mechanism, I've never had any problems with it but apparently if you don't engage the splines fully then it'll ping off, the dealer told me to be safe before it went in to him to put the handbrake on and wiggle it to make sure it is seated correctly. This is cured by a new mechanism with different shapes splines.
