Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007)
vRS 1.9 TD 5dr Hatchback
What's going to go wrong next?
Bought a 1 family owned car with 90k on the clock and a full Skoda main dealer history and owned for 2 years. Driving experience was OK is a straight line but handling is not very good due to heavy engine and gearbox up front in a small car. Cheap to insure and tax. Before I had it car had new Turbo, Console bushes, suspension arms and intercooler + pipework so I thought we were good for sometime.
Two weeks into ownership the coolant light came on and I discovered a leak from the bottom corner of the radiator so this was replaced (it's an epic job due to the way VAG build the cars) at great labour time and while it was coming apart it was discovered that the wiring for the coolant temp sensors was broken at the connector so a replacement had to be made and fitted.
The clutch and DMF then had to be replaced at an eye watering £700, even with pattern parts.
At the next service a new CV joint was required due to the badly fitting Skoda OEM CV boots keep coming detached, cheap boots may only last a year but at least they stay fitted.
Car then failed to start and was traced to another broken wire (wire snapped of by the plug) at the starter, this is a common problem as the wiring loom is cheaply made and prone to fractures.
At the next MOT a brake caliper had to be replaced as the handbrake mechanism had failed on one side.
For the next year:-
Syncromesh failed on 4th gear.
I had to fit assistor springs to both rear brake caliper as they started to bind.
Electric window switches failed.
Seals failed on rear doors letting water into rear footwells.
Owned car for a little over 2 years and covered 15k, was a money pit and only got just over 42mpg average. VAG reliability? Utter Myth IMO, never buying another.
