BMW 5 Series GT (2009 - 2017)
530d SE Gran Turismo
Roomy, comfortable, quiet, great for rear passengers and not a bad drive, but software problems.
Software issue from day 1 saying rear pads needed replacing. Convinced dealer knew about this but let me drive away from the showroom only for the fault to show up a few miles down the road. Took three visits to put right.
Ongoing intermittent screen display fault has been there since new - memory button ribbon appears at top of screen even though memory buttons not touched - lived with this as no big problem but finally took it back for diagnosis and repair. Dealer wanted it for one day, which ran into two days and then said repaired and OK to pick up. Picked it up, drove off and SOS fault appeared 200yds down the road! They had not road tested the vehicle (mileage reading unchanged) else they would have seen the fault - or did they? It's been back in the workshop now for 5 days awaiting replacement part and likely to be some more days yet.
Not convinced that the dealership has the requisite workshop skills in place to diagnose issues quickly and accurately.
Update: It is now day 10. Day 9: The part that would supposedly solve the problem arrived on day 8 but BMW advised the dealership that because another 5GT had suffered the same SOS fault they now believed it might be a software issue. I had to phone the dealership to find this out - no one phoned me! I asked for a replacement vehicle to be provided (which I had declined earlier) and was told to phone the BMW Dealerline. They said no replacement could be provided because the part had been delivered to the dealership! I asked them to sort the issue out with the dealer. I was phoned by dealership service to say that a replacement car would be provided and that the Dealership Line would phone me to arrange. No one phoned me. Will they phone today - Day 10?
Update 2: Day 10 came and a loan car was offered by BMW through Enterprise, but no guarantee that it would be a BMW. I declined the vehicles offered as Enterprise wanted information from me that I was not prepared to give. They also wanted to transfer the third party fire and theft cover from my own vehicle to their loan car!
Update 3: Day 11: dealership phoned to say that BMW had instructed them to now fit the part that came in three days ago and to apply a new software update but that they could not guarantee this would solve the problem. At 12:17 this was confirmed - the work had been done but the SOS light was still on! At 16:00 advised that BMW had told the dealer service team that the problem was down to software, and could take up to 2 weeks to fix.
Update 4: Day 12 on the basis that the dealer has said the car is safe to drive, and that they will put this in writing, I will take back the car and wait to hear when BMW think they have the amended software ready for download.
Update 5: Day 14 have received in writing confirmation that the vehicle is safe to drive; being returned today with SOS warning light on until advised that software fix is available.
Update 6: Day 21 No contact from dealer since day 14; assume therefore that software fix is still not available. Vehicle displays SOS warning light a few seconds after startup.
Update 7: Day 33 Car picked up by dealer and returned later that day with SOS warning light issue fixed. Hopefully this ends the software issue. Dealer also offered financial compensation which has been accepted.
