Audi Q2 (2016 on)
1.4T FSI 35
A delightful compact quality SUV
My wife & I purchased an almost new Audi Q2 9 months ago as a replacement for our two-year old VW T-Cross. The VW, although otherwise refined and competent, irritated by having creaking door seals and a dull thump from somewhere near the rear suspension. Both of these flaws proved to be insoluble.
Previous Audis we have owned proved to be very well-built and solid. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who believe that to be judged a “refined drive” implies that the bodywork is entirely free of squeaks, rattles, thumps and bumps – that is the starting point. And so, trusting that the Q2 would live up to the standard of past Audis, we acquired this Q2. Thus far, the Q2 has certainly not disappointed as there is not the slightest sign of squeaking or rattling bodywork on our car.
Another measure of motoring refinement must surely be the ride? Reviewers of the Q2 have highlighted a fidgety ride, especially with cars fitted with low-profile tyres. Our Q2 uses 55xR17 tyres, and is not without a degree of riding knobbliness on anything but the smoothest of roads. Nevertheless, given that a firm suspension seems to be a required trade-off for this car's very satisfactory level of stability on a straight-line and whilst cornering during open road higher-speed touring, we judge the trade-off as being worthwhile.
The DSG gearbox must be in a class of its own – consistently providing the smoothest of well-judged ratio swapping. For me this is automatic gearbox perfection.
Finally, we find this particular four cylinder turbo petrol engine to be both smooth and powerful enough to provide for pleasant motoring under all of the driving conditions we encounter. And, while not exceptional, the car is also adequately economical.
In summary then we rate this Q2 to be one of the most satisfying cars we've owned – solid and a pleasure to drive with a very refined drive train – it cannot be too far off the standard set by Volvo's class-leading? but more expensive XC40.
