Hyundai Ioniq 5 named UK Car of the Year 2022

The fully electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 has been named UK Car of the Year (UKCOTY) 2022, finishing ahead of the Skoda Enyaq, with BMW’s iX and the Porsche Taycan in joint third place.

The Ioniq 5’s win means that in three out of the past four years, battery power has triumphed over the internal combustion engine in the UKCOTY awards.

Its win follows being named the Best Family Car in the category winners, announced on 1 March.

Challen’s co-director in the Awards, Alisdair Suttie added: “Quite where Hyundai has found so much space inside a family car is a mystery, but one we’re more than happy to ponder for many years to come.”

Ashley Andrew, MD, Hyundai UK said that it was "a huge endorsement to receive the title of UK Car of the Year".

“The Ioniq 5 has really captured the attention of UK consumers, offering a stylish, premium full EV experience that appeals to almost every type of new car buyer," he said.

Should we buy an electric vehicle outright?

We're looking at the MG ZS EV to replace our 2014 Nissan X-Trail. We're not keen on paying interest on a lease when we could afford to buy outright and are happy to keep a vehicle for more than 3 years, as we have done with the X-Trail. I'm not sure if that's sensible with an EV though. What happens with the battery life over time?
The battery warranty on the MG ZS EV is seven years/80,000 miles. After this time, MG says the battery must have 70 per cent of its original capacity. Based on older electric vehicles, we're finding that batteries aren't degrading as quickly as you might expect. They should be good for at least 10 years, if not more. It's rare for them to suddenly fail, either - they simply lose capacity over time. This suggests that buying an MG ZS EV could be a sound purchase. The only thing to consider is if you have any desire to have 'the latest thing' - electric vehicles are developing rapidly and you might find, after three years, you want to upgrade to the latest model.

Should I sell my diesel car?

Should I consider selling my diesel Volvo XC60 soon as diesel is getting to be a dirty word?
It depends... how many miles do you do a year and do you really need a diesel? If you rarely drive into city centres and regularly cover long motorway journeys or need the torque of a diesel to tow a trailer or caravan, for example, don't be too hasty. If you mainly use your diesel XC60 for short journeys or less than 12,000 miles a year, it might be a good idea to swap it for a petrol, hybrid or electric alternative.
