what would you buy used right now? - bingobango

In the market for a used family car, have a Ford focus 2004 which is getting on a bit and looking for more space and something reliable.

I don't know where to start - so I put it to you..what would you buy in a used family car right now? Year, make, model, and why..

I know everyone's needs are different, but in general terms..

How much cash you giving me to spend on this mythical car?

Up to you really but let's keep it realistic. Say 10k-12k or under. But one person would buy a 2008 car at 5k and keep the rest of the cash...Or maybe someone would buy a nearly new Octavia..

Just looking to see what different people would do and how they would decide and why..

Sounds like what I would do. After all a 2012 car is unlikely to be 5k better than a 5k 2008 car.

Skoda is just revamping its Octavia so there may be deals on run out models. Certainly worth a look as are the numerous MPVs.

So what's the best option to get value versus age?

It's 2013 now so would a 2009 or 2010 be best value? What sort of mileage is too much in a car, say a diesel.

Is a 12k Octavia late 2012 with low mileage a better choice than say a 2009 avensis with 20k miles for just under 8 grand.

Just wondering what people think and.. why

AT three years old, depreciation is 50%.

With some cars you get a 5 years warranty when new.

It's an easy decision.

Start from there and look at reliability tables.

That cuts it down to about two car makers . none of them Eurpoean..

Why not European? I take the reliability survey's with a pinch of salt.

But some of their popular hatchbacks are indeed built in Europe.

If you are looking to keep for a longish time as your 2004 car suggests then Volvo V70s are a good bet. Lots of room and one of the longest lasting cars with some TLC.
