Need cheap small car to get to the railway station - keymoo

Hi, I need a small car to get me 6 miles to my local railway station for commuting to work. I would like the car to last 2-3 years and cost no more than £2,000. I'm after something that is reliable, cheap to insure and run, and don't care about style or performance. Any suggestions?

I have a friend who does the same thing, He works in London so his car is left in the station car park for 12+hrs a day...He also travels approx 5 miles to the station...

For the past 6 years hes been using a 306 1.4 petrol.

Its good enough to cope with constant short trips and not flash enough to get anything pinched off it. OK the sides are covered in dents after all those years of people opening there car doors on the side of his 306 in the station car park....but come the weekends hes out and about in the family V70 D5. Plus the 306 is big enough to take to the tip and not get the decent car mucky..insurance is cheap and mpg is very good. It gets serviced once a year at the cheapest garage possible using the cheapest parts and cheapest tyres and the thing still won;t die....

Paul.

1.1 106. The later ones are economical, and a total hoot to drive. Like Jame May says, fun to drive without losing your licence.

I had a 2002 1.1 106 Independence, and I got a consistant 550 miles to a tank, which worked out at 55mpg. Heater is melting your face off within a mile on them too, great for short winter commutes.

2003 ones come with power steering as standard, before that PAS was only on the higher Zest models.

Just about anything small, made in the Far East and unloved by most.

Anything that a young lad would be prepared to be seen in will cost more and be more likely to go missing from the car park.

I'd look for any of the Daihatsus. Those things'll do short runs from cold 'til the cows come home without complaining, nobody'll nick it or want any bits off it and Daihatsu's exit from the market should mean the S/H prices are a tad depressed.

the good thing about a secondhand Pug. is that theres millions about and loads of spares at the breakers yards/ebay.

ie if you come back to the car and find a headlight or tail lights been taken out or wing mirrors been removed it'll not cost much to get a replacement....

.(had that happen to a 205 I ran years ago headlight cracked.....went to the breakers...asked the guy behind the counter...he asked how many do you want!!! ) hmmm much prefered climbing over the cars and removing what i wanted...(and had a back pocket with other parts......hmm they always had big dogs as well.....hahahaa.....removing a half shaft from a mk2 escort whilst standing on another car roof was fun....grin....

If it's under ten miles why not buy a second hand 50cc scooter. It's free to park at the station and you'll get so much to the gallon you won't believe it. Plus you'll never be held up by traffic.

Scooter - may be cheap and good for the traffic, but exposed to the elements ... wind, rain snow, sun etc .. not everyone wants that twice a day!.

(I know one can buy protective clothing, but change and leave it where?)

I changed in the office, travelled in biker gear. If it was wet I had a kind of parachute material boiler suit that folded up to a very small paperback book size pack in one of it's own pockets. Dry as a bone. Kept the lid in the scooters built in storage bin.

Burgman 400cc the best machine for commuting to the station that man has yet to devise. Plus it did nearly 95mph and 0 to 60 quicker than sports cars. And turned in good mileage. Course to run a 400 you have to have a full bike licence, not the case for a 50cc.

Only got rid of it to move to a bigger bike. Felt the need for speed. After a big bike I have yet to find anything on four wheels that is a tenth as exciting.

Another thing. Avoid "face off" stereos if you'll be leaving it in a public car park.

I know three people who have returned to their publicly parked car with the stereo faceplate in their pocket to find a smashed window, the glovebox open and......the boot crowbarred open(!)

In all cases, the plod pointed out that the tea-leaves know that most people chuck the front in the glovebox or boot and the fact that the front comes off advertises that it's worth something.

Early C1s and 107s are starting to get to around this level.

At least get a vehicle with an immobilizer cos if you don't,they'll nick it to ride around in while looking for a better motor.

Why spend £
Need cheap small car to get to the railway station - Jase

I did this precisely this for 4yrs with an £800 (at the time of purchase) Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 "Trip". Invisible car to thieves and about as simple and cheap as a car can get. Nothing went wrong in that time. They are pretty awful to drive and v. slow, but reliable and perfect for the job if you have a "proper" car to use at the weekend/longer journeys etc..

Why spend £2000? You can spend half that for this mission.

Is there really this much crime in railway station car parks ?? The amount they charge, they should have loads of security IMHO.

I've left my car on Northampton or Milton Keynes station most working days since Feb 1990. One possible attempt in early days when it used to get left overnight - at time Northampton station was a bit of a hotspot. Nothing taken but side window bore marks of a failed attempt to shatter it.

Since then nowt. Cars have been succesively a brace of BX's, a 205 and a Xantia. Not flash and only basic radio/cassette. No sat nav ever.

The main thing this car has to do is start first time every time and not let you down. For £2000 condition is more important than make or model, but that said there's nothing quite like an old Toyota for soldiering on and on. In your position I'd look for a Corolla or Yaris that's been regularly serviced.

Honda Civic 1.4 1995-1999 vintage wait for an immaculate one owner to appear.
Totally reliable but unwanted, you should pick one up for less than a thousand.

I'm assuming you're a girl. Get a bicycle, it will tone your thighs and bum, not to mention the aerobic stuff.

Your local station must have lock-up lockers with CCTV, and they seem to live in mediaeval times, unfortunately.

+1. The number of days it actually rains in the commute slot are pretty small. And for a third the sum you're setting aside for the car you could get a folding bike and save on the tube /bus as well.
