Honda Prelude 2.2 Vtec 97/98 - Dealer servicing or not! - A_Lexbury

Hello all.

First post and new to the HJ forums, though I have been using the site for a number of years for advice on buying cars. I am a complete idiot when it comes to mechanics and what is worth what, though I learn quickly when I need to!

I wanted to ask all you experienced people a question: Is it actually worth getting your dealer to service your car any more?

We are told by the Manufacturer to ensure that only affiliated dealers service our motors, and to do so with startling regularity, and we do because a) we want our cars to work and not break and b) to keep resale.

Acknowledging and then ignoring the dodgy back street garages for the mo, a good independent can do a proper service for sometimes half the cost, (even Halfords, though I don't know how good they are). So we are down to the resale value. How much extra have you paid a main dealer in overpriced services vs how much extra you would get for your car when you sell it. It must be small now, and not really worth the bother except on premium marques (Aston anyone?).

For older cars, like mine, the only reason to go to a dealer for a service is if it includes something fairly unique, such as the VTEC valve clearance checks and adjustment or 4WS.

Discuss.

On a cheeky side note, anyone know of an independent in Bucks/Berks that can work on four wheel steering. Honda in Beaconsfield quoted me £2500 (yes) and I now don't trust them.

Pardon any spelling mistakes, I take time but have dispraxia and miss things a lot.

Hi A, and welcome to the HJ forum.

I don't take my car to a Mazda dealer for servicing - I reckon it's too old and as long as I keep up the FSH it should be ok when I come to sell it. The cheapest place for my car's last service was Kwikfit, who threw in an aircon top up with MOT and servicing.

I might do it if I had something really fancy/very new, particulalry if it required complex diagnostic software (I'm guessing that gets patched, updated and debugged after release the same as other software!)

I've a friend who likes to do her own car servicing and just makes sure she gets the MOT pass.

Honda dealers (at least where we live) operate the 'Honda Happiness' scheme for cars 4 years or older. We have a jazz in the family that goes in every year for a service and the costs have always been very reasonable. They offer a 'level 1,2,3 or 4' service according to mileage/schedules. We had a level 2 done in January which cost us £180, including a 'free' MOT.

No doubt we could find a local specialist that would offer something cheaper, but we've developed a level of trust with the Honda dealer (never felt ripped off) that is worth the small premium.

Worth looking up the Honda Happiness as there is fixed pricing on a whole range of standard jobs/repairs e.g. exhausts, brake pads - even if you just use it to ensure some local outfit doesn't try to rip you off.

Thats a point, I hadn't really looked into it and assumed it was for new cars, (I've been out the country for 7 years with a fab '94 BMW 525). I'll have a look although neither of the dealers near me fill me with too much confidence.

Cheers

Find a good indie, main dealers are just too expensive for me, I use an indie for a 12 year odl Merc and save a bomb and he's just as good if not better than the dealer.

Our cars go to the dealer for servicing until the warranty runs out. Then it's DIY or independent.

On a related point, I do use a dealer for servicing and find them very good and quite reasonable and I have built up a level of trust over 5 years. However they do pull some 'funny' tricks. I always top my screenwash reservoir to the brim before taking the car in for service. Every time the invoice has a £5 charge for screenwash. I always get them to remove this item before payment. The first time I had a bit of resistance so I produced a dated photograph of the full reservoir, so.now they remove it straightaway. When I asked why they do it at all they say 'the computer puts it on automatically'. Thousands of cars getting a main dealer service weekly is a lot of money for nowt. Cheers Concrete
