Porsche 911 964 - Insuring cars for long-term use in Mainland Europe - BerlinPaul

My family and I moved to Berlin in August 2012. I have an old Porsche 911 that I would like to bring out to Germany for the duration of our stay (2-3 years). I have spoken with two insurance companies, both of whom have informed me that I cannot insure the car for overseas use for typically longer than one month and that if I want to keep the car for longer than this in Berlin I must re-register it in Germany. If necessary, I am happy to keep the car in the UK each winter, with the car living in Germany for approx. 7 months each year. I have known several people from other parts of Europe maintaining the original registration of their cars whilst on extended stays in the UK. What is the position on this? Will I be able to get insurance in the UK for long term use of my car in Germany whilst maintaining my car's UK registration?

If you have registered in Germany as you should have then keeping the car for that length of time then you must register the vehicle in Germany.Having said that if you have a UK address then there are plenty of insurance companies that will give 6 months or 12 months in europe included in there fully comprehensive policy but probably cheaper to re register the car and insure it in Germany where you will get full cover for any EU country as standard unlike the the rip off so called UK insurance.

In the past I have used Stuart Collins (Google 'em), who are specialists in long-term cover for overseas use, for this sort of thing.

I have also recommended them to several colleagues, all of whom have subsequently thanked me for pointing them in that direction and not a few of whom found that the rates quoted for long-term continental cover were rather cheaper than that which they had been paying for UK use(!)

No connection, just a happy customer......

Registering in Jair-many would mean you'd have to take the notoriously tough (I think it's called the ) TUV test (like an MOT).

If it was me I'd sell it here and buy one back when I returned to the UK.

And probably have to sort out the headlights for driving on the right…
