mk1 xr2 crossflow - score in cylinder of crossflow engine - AJP

I got a crossflow from an xr2 to put in my mk1 fiesta but after taking the head off to inspect it i found a score in the first cylinder, it's about 2 inches down and runs down below the piston, it's probably about 0.3mm deep, will this affect the engine much? will it need reboring?

Technically it does need reboring, but the cost is prohibitive. If the source of the scoring can be identified you could try soldering it. This used to be a popular cheap fix.

And how are you going to raise the cylinder wall to in excess of 190 degrees C. This could be a busted ring that caused this damage. Regards Peter

It could be, but a rebore, hone and a set of oversized pistons just isn't warranted on an old Kent engine. If the rings are ok, bodge it and get the head back on.

I've heard of scores like that being filled with, well, filler. Perhaps one of these products advertised as 'chemical metal' would do the job.

It's not as if it has to take the wear of the rings, the metal either side of the score will do that. It's the combustion process, oil and fuel that could destroy it.
