Rover 45 2003 1.4 - Am I being ripped off - nightmairs

Hi I took my rover 45 to a garage as the cylinder head had gone. When the part was skimmer it was apparently warped, he said he would try and seal it anyway. It would not seal and recommended a new engine. I agreed to this. Garage had car for three weeks promising 10 days in a row it would be ready then not. i was assured he didn't want to return vehicle because it was under 3 month warranty and did not want it to need to come back as he would have to fix it for nothing. I picked the car up at 11am, was told that he'd had to jump start it that morning but the drive home would charge it. Got home car would not start.. Jump started vehicle to go buy new battery. Mechanic who was going to fit battery said there was nothing wrong with it. Contacted garage and told them this, was instructed to return vehicle and they would fit a new engine. Four days later engine had been returned to breakers yard where it had been purchased and they would check it. Next correspondence was that engine was running fine with they're gearbox and starter and they had requested that my mechanic remove gearbox and starter from rover to go to yard and check them I'm now told today gearbox and starter are faulty and they can repair for £385. That is with them paying for half the cost of parts due to inconvenience. Or can get car back but will charge £200 for removing gearbox etc. this car was returned under assumption that it was under warranty. Is there a regulatory body I can ask to investigate this? Does this all sound a bit fishy!!

How long have you had the car?

It reads to me like the warranty mentioned was from the garage who were repairing the car, ie they were covering the work they were doing for you.

It does sound fishy if the car went in for a head gasket problem and now needs a new gearbox and starter. You need to ask the garage for a proper explanation of what is going on.

had the car since january and paid a £1000 have paid garage £450 already,, thats £100 for fitting head gasket (supplied patrs at value of £127) £250 for recon engine and £100 for fitting it. What I dont understand is why he would need gearbox to check engine, I checked online and it would appear that starter motor for my model is not conected to the gearbox in anyway. Can anyone verify this foe me?

It isn't on mine - it's bolted to the front nearside, dead easy to get and and remove. The price you paid for the engine repair sounds way too cheap?

What you paid for the car isn't important at that age, at 8 years with a leaky k series it is hardly worth fixing. I assume that the car was not a recent purchase, and sadly, you would have been better scrapping it when you were told the head was warped and it needed a new block. all you could do is to check the engine number to see if another engine has really been fitted. Advice to anyone with any of these engines, if it has a problem, get shot of it.
