FIAT Panda - General - Oil, does it have a used by date ? - dieselweasel

Shocked by the £296 that Fiat think I'll pay to service wifeys 3 year old Panda, I'll do the job myself.

One question. I've not serviced a car for years, and have some Millers XFD full synthetic diesel oil in the garage, where its been for at least six years. Its sealed in its unopened container.

Will it, or its additives, have "gone off" ? Is it fit to use ?

I'm a competent DIYer and have a Corsa manual, which has the same 1.3 jtd engine.....

Good for you. I'm sure your oil will be OK, after all its been in the ground a long time. I have been servicing and repairing my own cars for over 50 years, I don't know how many people can afford these prices - I can't.

It should be absolutely fine, especially as it is synthetic,, there would only be a possible problem if it was extra-virgin olive oil...

Also worth checking the specification of the oil you have. As its a diesel it will have an API Cx rating - where x could be A to G etc. As long as you use the same grade or higher as recomended by FIAT it should be OK.

If the Panda has a DPF, you'll probably need a more modern ashless diesel oil ... older oils can give ash by-products which quickly block the pores in the DPF matrix.

If your bottle of Millers is 5 / 6 years old it may well not have the latest ashless formulation.

If the Panda doesn't have a DPF, no worries.
