Are the camshaft sensors and crankshaft sensors the same thing and would failure of these cause completely dead non starts?

No to the first question-yes to the second.The crankshaft sensor only gives position of the crank,not which stroke it's on-that's why you need a camshaft sensor as well.

Thanks. So would I also be right in saying that breakdown of the crankshaft sensor would contribute to absolute no turn,crank or fire when the ignition is attempted and could this be intermittent from a faulty sensor?

Ford Focus TDCI 2005 - Camshaft/Crankshaft position sensor - Railroad.

The crankshaft sensor tells the ECM engine speed and position. The camshaft sensor tells the ECM cylinder identification. Both will prevent the engine from running if they fail on a TDCi.....
