100 mile daily commute ideal petrol car - daveyK_UK

Hi,

im writing on behalf of my friend.

He needs a car, ideally petrol for a daily commute of 50 miles each way, of which 80 miles is motorway and 10 miles a roads and 10 miles urban roads.

It has to be a petrol (had problems with his diesels in the past)

and it has to be 5 door

as reliable brand as possible (aka prefere a far eastern brand over a french brand)

He intends to spend £3 grand on it at auction, but will go upto £4 grand on the day for something special.

What do you recommend?

My initial thoughts was a late 1.4 Toyota corolla.

Any ideas?

This is exactly my dilemma too
What to buy for under £2 K for the same driving route.

Have a list of 30 cars now and its doing my nut in.

What becomes of a company car driver to having to own one again = painful !

first on list is reliable....
insurance up to group 15
Comfy for 6 footer
must fit a suitcase in boot
MPG around 40 mpg
Low Yearly Tax
not rwd
Kind on the eyes

citroen xsara 1.6i
nissan almera 1.6
god its depressing looking !

I commuted 154 miles a day, 3-5 days a week for four years. this was done, whilst driving a Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 petrol. I had this car for five years and it was so reliable and good to drive cross country and on the motorway . Driving like a vicar I regularly acheived 37-38mpg (40+ on V-power). Michelin Primacy HP's exceeded 35000 miles per set. I would recommend for your money that you look for an 04-05 reg 1.8 TS which you should be able to pick up for £3K-£4.. with 50-60000 on the clock. With a good service history should easily be able to stick another 100K on it. My car at 95000 miles felt just run in and if it hadn't been for a growing family then I would not have chopped it in for a new Mazda 5 last year.
