Had some welding done and when the garage reconnected the battery, the electrics went haywire - dashboard lights came on, warning lights came on, alarm went off etc. They have no idea what's happened and our beautiful car is still sitting in the garage 2 weeks after the welding was finished. Any ideas?

The electric current may have spiked the ECU or blown another circuit.

Read the HJ Frequent Questions about Small Claims Court. It's the garage's responsibility...

Thanks for the reply, but what does that mean exactly? Should it be simple to recitify? Why would reconnecting the battery cause this to happen in the first place?

I pressume it was welded useing an electric welder Mig/Tig,if it has not been done correctly it has probably blown a numerous number of electric components and if its spiked the ECU then its probably US and requires replacing. The garage that did the work will have to pay they should carry insurance for this sort of problem if not they will have to pay out of their own pockets could be very expensive.I hope its nothing more that an ECU reset, but you can damage electronics simply by connecting a multi meter incorrectly imagine what damage can be done when you connect a welder.

It was gas welded - they disconnected the battery because of the potential for sparks to cause a gas explosion, so I don't think it could be anything to do with electric welding. Thanks anyway.

Are you sure it was just gas on its own,its not very good for car bodywork giving a very poor weak weld .Even so the garage has an obligation to put it right and not next week but now they should also have given you a courtesy car as well.

I would be asking where was the welding carried out ! heat transfer melting wiring looms in all sorts of places.

I have to question gas welding in this day and age ??? are they sure ?? or are they just trying to reduce there commitment to possible damage ?

Down to the garage, you could ask for an independant inspection.

I agree comments on gas welding. My local garage uses gas welding only to brun off old exhaust systems..

Be aware: once you challenge them and find they have lied about anything, you need to be prepared to see evidence destroyed. Take photos of everything as a precaution.. before hand.

Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. The welding was to the jacking points on either side of the car. Presumably electrics run through all the sills, so melting / damage to wiring definitely seems like the most probable cause. Aaaaaaargh!

oh dear it sounds like you need to visit a specialist who can start to unravel the mess.

melted wiring loom sounds most likley, why on earth were thye gas welding ? can't belive they were not using a MIG and even with a MIg heat transfer can still burn wiring and seat belts. Worth unreeling the belts to see if they are intact !

I remeber having a car in for MOt after some welding and checked the belts and they just kept comming untill a melted end appeared.

One looks at the welds will quickly show how it was welded. Plus when did Jag start using aluminum ?

EDU should be disconnect if it turners out that it was not gas!
