Just to say that I've trolled trough about ten online insurance sites over the last couple of days - very tedious 'cos of repeat info! - and have found TESCO significantly cheaper than ALL the rest (and I'd narrowed down initially with Which?'s advice on best buys for my category). Although necessarily generalizing, I'd suggest any new/renewers try their site. I've no idea how good they are as insurers, but I'd imagine their size/reputation should make them reasonable. They were a Which? best buy for my category.

Been with Tesco for 3yrs now, for me no-one else beats them (group 17 car). For the wife though, www.directchoice.co.uk have been the best recently. Try also: its4me.co.uk; theinsurancecentre.co.uk; quotelinedirect.co.uk/quote

Egg is offering a deal where it will guarantee to beat any quote for car insurance. It will also promise that your premium will not increase next year.

I don't use them, but the online quote system is very easy and quick, which is very useful if you are looking for a new car and want to know what the insurance costs will be.

Jonathan: Thanks. I'm about to get my fist car so that's useful info. I had a notion that the Egg offer is for *re*newers - but I'm sure you're right.

I found elephant.co.uk to be the cheapest by quite a long way when insuring my 406 V6 Coupe 6 months ago, Direct Line were the next cheapest as I recall.

I think that different insurers specialise in different areas of the market and vary their quotes accordingly, possibly even deliberately pricing themselves out of the market when they don't want a particular vehicle or driver's business. I found Tesco uncompetitive when I compared them 6 months ago, but on a smaller less powerful car they may well be cheapest.

I had a look at egg.com and after reading the small-print I decided their headline claims are misleading. Take this hypothetical example:

1. Egg quotes you £200
2. Your current renewal premium is £100
3. NOTE: This is not just any company's quote - it's got to be a renewal quote!
4. You go with Egg and pay your £200
5. You fill in a claim form
6. Egg sends you £101 cash
7. Next year your Egg premium will be £200 (provided you haven't had any accidents etc) - it's not gone up!

Under these circumstances, it's difficult to see why you should want to change from your existing insurance company.

For me (male, 35, low-med risk area), elephant was a Which? best buy for ins groups 8-13, Tesco 1-13. I tried elephant yesterday: their quote was something over £100 more. You're quite right, Boff: there's quite a bit of segmentation in the car ins market. This is my first private car: I have no NCD and have had a license < two years, so perhaps that doesn't matter so much to Tesco. I thought Egg was only attractive to renewers...

Be interesting who paid the least for fully comp. insurance. I have just renewed Fully comp. protected full bonus with legals and free breakdown cover any driver over 25 for 1.3l auto metro from Fortis originally via Budget website. Cost £199.46 up £9 over two years so doubt could better that.

Hmmm, Budget online might be worth trying then. Thanks, Andrew.

...Some weeks' later. Having checked around further. Tesco is STILL much cheaper than rival quotes for my new Polo 1.2S: I'm going with them.

Morris 1000, agreed value £2900, fully comp, free breakdown cover, classic policy so no ncb required, garaged in lincolnshire, unlimited mileage, £77 with footman james. With free road fund licence, zero depreciation, cheap bits, ask me why I drive one! Can't beat it for a local use car.

I must say that I've just had a cheaper quote than Tesco, from www.directchoice.co.uk (suggested earlier in this thread). I doubt this could be beaten and is less than half most other quotes. When I've ensured I'm comparing like-with-like with Tesco, I'll go for it. Others may want to try...

Footman James may be related to Backstairs Billy so he is probably some sort of Royal Butler - be careful.

I have got full comp, 2 drivers, £100 XS (£40 on windscreen), protected no-claim, legal stuff for £175 on a 2 yr old HDI Peugeot 206 with Liverpool Victoria thru Frizzels with a discount for being in the Civil Service. If you are eligible to join CSMA, £15 a year which also brings a good monthly magazine, then you can get big discounts on car insurance, breakdown services, cars and home elctricals. When I hunted around at renewal time nobody got within £50 of Frizzell's quote and some were over £100 more.

Well worked out Ian. I almost thought it was worth going through the palaver with Egg, even though the first year saving was only £1, just to get the guarantee of no increase in the second year. But like you say, the no increase is a scam because the first year premium is (in my case too) far more and it is only "competitive" because of the cashback deal.

What a scam!

I can't confirm what you are saying from my reading of the website though. Can you refer me to the bit of the small print which states that the renewal premium will not be more than the ORIGINAL first year premium, rather than the MATCHED first year premium as would appear to be the intuitive answer?

I'll report them to the ASA if the small print confirms what you are saying, or if you've phoned them and checked.

You can't expect Egg to be quite as clear as that. It's a question of how you interpret the phrase "If Egg can't beat your renewal premium we promise to refund the difference plus £1". With this wording, Egg are NOT promising to reduce their premium - they are saying they CAN'T meet the competitor's premium, and they are offering you a refund, not a reduction of premium. And since they haven't reduced their premium, my analysis stands.

This is based solely on my reading of the printed text - I have not been in touch with Egg. It would be up to lawyers to say if my interpretation is correct.

This comes from www.egg.com , then select "Motor Insurance Promise" and read the (*) and (**) footnotes.

I also think this is backed up by the fact that you have to pay the full premium first (or the first installation if paying monthly) and then claim your cash refund separately.

That quote, mentioned above by me, that I thought was cheaper than Tesco turned out to be a 'never to be repeated' offer: after Royal & Sun Alliance quoting me £50-odd less than Tesco on www.directchoice, trying a few days later with exactly the same info produced a rather higher quote - inexplicably. I tried yet again and still got the higher figure. So I've gone with Tesco. I called Directchoice: they couldn't explain why the quote had increased from £300-odd to £480-odd just days later. Tesco came in at £350 for my Polo (I'm a new driver)
