Toyota Avensis - Poor cold running - TheOilBurner

I have a 2005 Avensis 1.8 VVTI with about 40k miles on the clock. When the car is cold it seems very jerky and "coughs" 1 or 2 times during the first 1/2 mile or so. It seems like a slight misfire, but no codes are stored.

Once it starts to warm up, it's fine. Any ideas?

I've cleaned out the MAF and throttle body with carb cleaner, replaced the plugs and reset the ECU. None of which has helped so far.

*bump* - any ideas at all appreciated. :)

Cooalnt temperature sensor checked?

Toyota Avensis - Poor cold running - TheOilBurner

Thanks madf, I haven't checked that yet, but I will. It sounds like a plausible culprit, but wouldn't that also affect the temp readout on the dashboard, or is that read from something else?

Cheers.

If like other Toyota engines you may have separate readouts ... It could be the injection system is controlled by a systemm similar to yaris in which case you are talking copper tubes and ....a messy job.. Ask on Toyota Owners club forums...

Just checked it. You're right, it's a seperate readout. With the sensor disconnected the dash display still worked, and the engine ran much better, but idled high.

On checking the resistance fo the sensor (in situ), it measured 3.9 ohms when cold (aprox 20c) and 1.9 ohms when half warm (aprox 40c), both these values are way too high according to my chart from the TOC.

I'll try a new sensor and see what happens...

Manys thanks for your advice madf. :)

Mine's a double virtual G&T... on second thought quadruples are better... and save energy - less pouring required...:-)

I just drink from the bottle, less washing up required! :D
