is it worth gettin fixed? - tattes
Ok, after takin my car to an MOT, it failed, so far they got £236 including the MOT test that is, and it could be more yet, i got a ford escort encore, 45k miles, the bill could go up more, for example, the brakes at the back might need fixing, but he said that might be just coz its wet, so is it worth it or not? the car is 1991.

What exactly did it fail on?

Depends. If you could find another car with 12 months MOT on it for £250 that is in appreciably better condition than yours then no it isn't. Sometimes it is better the devil you know as I don't think anyone sells a car when it is in good condition. The owner usually suspects that something major and expensive is about to let go so they get rid of it. Running an older car is about total cost of ownership not necessarily never spending more than it is worth on repairs, so it is a hard one to call. If this money will give you a couple of years of trouble free motoring then it is worth it.

oh and also they said the exhaust was blowing and stuff, but i had a new exhaust put on a few months back from kwik fit, so surly if i get it fixed they should reburst that money? somet about the gasket not being welded or somet, and i payed for a total new exhaust, my dad seems to think i should get it all done, but i could pay upto £400 on just the car, then i gotta get a new bonnet, as it is dinted, and how much would that cost? i mean i do like my car, but is it worth it?

I would pay my £40 and take it to another MOT station and see what they fail it on.

oh yeah, at the moment the car sounds like a tank, is it coz i aint used it for a while or is it coz its blowing, i mean it was sounding rought, then i got a new exhaust, and it was ok, now its sounding rough, but i aint used it for a weak, so is it a mixture, is there anyway of makin your car sound better, apart from buying a new engine? i think its just coz its blowing, but even before that my mates orion sounded better, and mines a newer car than his, if i clean the engine and stuff, would it help? any adivce would be gratefull, ty

I could be wrong, but doesn't the Escort Encore have the 1.3 engine? If so then you will find that this engine has a habit of been noisey, not using it for a week may make it noisey for the first mile, but not after that.

All you can do is make sure that you change the oil every 5,000 miles at least, and only ever use good quality oil. Now, I'm about to say something technical that goes over my own head, but what about adjusting the tappets? This may quieten it down. Anyone want to suggest more about that?

As far as the exhaust is concerned. DO NOT pay someone else to fix it as Kwik-Fit will not re-imburse you, instead, take the car and receipt for the work to them and ask them to sort it. It depends which bit is at fault though as I doubt that they will have replaced the whole lot, or did they? If they did replace the entire system then you definately have reason for them to fix it.

Otherwise, I would spend the money unless you know a viable alternative. Is the car structurally sound? I;m assuming it's not been in any major accidents (your little bump shouldn't have done too much harm) If so then I would get it fixed. My mate had the same age Escort and it turned into one nightmare after another but the biggest tell tale warning was that the chassis was gone, he should have known to bail out then...

Oh forgot to mention, you may well be able to replace the bonnet with one from a scrappy for about £30, hopefully in the same colour!

Your mate's Orion will probably have the 1.4 or 1.6 CVH engine, this was much quieter and more refined than the 1.3 HCS engine which would explain why they sound so different...

Tattes,

Any chance giving us the full story in one go, rather than "oh yeah it's also got this wrong with it" then post again adding "oh yeah and there's also this as well"

Also from your earlier post in the discussion forum, you mentioned you're at college. I don't mean to offend you or anything, but could you perhaps write using the English language like you would be expected to use at College, rather than "coz" "makin" "somet" etc?

"This has got to be a wind up!"
Of course it is and, possibly, it is the work of one of the television "Soap" writers, who must have worked very hard, with much perception,to achieve such a good example of the deterioration of the written word. We must thank the Moderator for allowing it to be included in the forum, thereby showing us how banal and tedious it would be if genuine postings were to be so ill written.
