VW Golf 1.9 TDi - Spongy Brakes - snowdrop

I have fitted new front brake pads on my Golf 1.9 TDi (54 plate) and suddenly the pedal has gone spongy. What's happened?

You have fitted new brake pads - that's whats happened, you should find that as the pads bed in and assume the shape of the disc, the sponginess will go. The only other explanation could be air in the hydraulic system but unless you have had it open thats unlikley.
