>>Every week I get around 20 e-mails asking for Focus sized diesel, torque-converter automatics.

So, as that article is at least a couple of years old, has anyone actually bought an i30 diesel auto? We've got the i30 1.4 Comfort, but my dodgy knee appears to be getting worse and it's time to swap to an auto. I've found a few crdi auto's for sale, but wanted some feedback on what they're like.

HJ, did you ever drive one?

Not had one, but I test drove a demo crdi auto estate (whilst waiting for my i10 that I abandoned for a Corsa ...).
Only a short test drive, but the i30 drove nicely, was smooth & quiet, turned in to corners positively etc. Easy to drive and quite intuitive, even found myself at home very readily. Not exactly a ball of fire but I could live with it, and I think the demo had done only about 2000 miles so was likely still a bit stiff.
I too can recommend autos. As a "sporting" driver /enthusiast who used to think that auto boxes were for disabled, I now drive an auto by choice. You can vary your driving position more easily, sit further back etc, and suffer less back twisting etc from the clutch (as there is none obviously).

Get a good long test drive - I would want a couple of days so you can really get to know what it is like in all driving conditions.

I currently have a Mondeo 2.0 diesel auto courtesy car and it is quite unrefined under even quite gentle acceleration - the PSA diesel seems to have quite a noticeable diesel rattle even when well warmed through.

My wife was in it today for a lengthy run and on the motorway no bother, but as soon as we left the motorway and went into more stop start traffic she remarked how noisy the car was.

You also need to check the gearbox change points work with UK speed limits. The Mondeo hunts when you are in 40 limits.

So does the Qashqai. I find knocking it over to "manual" helps when it does that. Mildly irritating though.

I suppose this is a function of the ever increasing numbers of ratios on auto boxes.

Years ago, there would have been at most two changes from 0-60mph - first to second and second to third.

Now there could be five - first to second, second to third, third to fourth, fourth to fifth and fifth to sixth.
