Can somebody help................ My ford focus has a problem with the revs....... When driving and stopping at a set of lights, foot off accelerator and clutch in, the revs start going up and down from about 500 to 1200 then drops lower and stalls, engine restarts fine, and all ok until next set of lights........... the engine does not do this when cold and the idle revs are higher, problem starts when engine is hot....... plugs, airfilter, battery and oil have all been changed...... Anyone any ideas
|
I forgot to add............... if i keep my foot on the accelerator to bring the revs up to say 1500, after about 10 secs it starts going up and down again but maybe between 1000 and 2000 rpm..............

Idle Air Control Valve maybe..
|
We have seen a lot of problems with throttle body on this model, that may well be the cause in your case/
|
i am going to replace the idle control valve, as somebody else mentioned this to me,............. will let you know the outcome
|
Since it only happens when the car is hot, EGR valve gummed up and sticking open?
I'm going on the logic that revs bouncing up and down could be a vacuum leak, but i can't think of anything else that comes in to play only when the cars warm.
|
sorry to sound ignorant, but what is the EGR valve, and where is it.............
|
The 1.6 focus has a rubber breather hose that runs under the inlet manifold. It is very common for these to split which causes an air leak and consequently poor idle and stalling.I don,t think this model has an egr valve.hth

going to check this out before i buy a new idle control valve..............Cheers..

I am having exactly the same problems. A new Idle control valve was put on but it didn't make any difference (so put the old one back on). The Crankcase ventilation pipe was replace (which is under the inlet manifold) but again this made no difference. I have cleaned the old ICV and throttle body with carb cleaner and a toothbrush -this again has made no difference. The car has gone back into ford to be re-checked as they did a repair that didnt fix the problem.
I will let you know what they say.
(apperantly this is very very common but no one can seem to pin point the exact problem. have a look on ford owners club forum)

Idle Air Control Valve maybe..
>>
Yes I would say so too. Our Focus does this bouncing revs when it is warm but not hot or stone cold. It has always been like this and I have always considered it as an idiosyncracy. However if it was doing it hot it would be time to investigate.

i have refrained from buying any more parts, due to another article i have read on here....... i cannot find it at the moment but it says about making the ECU re-learn about the car's idle speed.............
Basically disconnect battery, and leave disconnected for about 15 mins, then reconnect battery and start engine without touching the accelerator, and let the engine warm up on it's own again without touching the revs, once warm, take for a run more than 5 miles, i think it said stop engine and give it a minute then restart as normal and hey presto, it should be fine........apparently this is supposed to work 19 out of 20 times............
I tried all this last night, and so far the revs have stayed level and it hasn't stalled.....HOORAY AND YIPPEE :-) ..... I just hope it continues......... Will give update over the next few days.....................

Did this solve the problem?
Going to try this if it worked for you

I replaced crank case breather hose as was compressing itself when engine was running and now revs are dropping so low its cutting out every time I stop at lights, junctions etc.
Is there an idle adjusting screw, bolt to set revs slightly higher. Or is the only way to just take the idle control valve out and clean it.
