ie a 2WD Yeti
or an Octavia?
, perhaps a 4*4 to get better ground clearance/ robustness?
We do NOT need or particularly want a 4WD ( with the fuel penalty)
as I can drive perfectly well with 2WD, despite current conditions
oh and diesel, diesel, diesel
cheers

Not sure why the Yeti, but the Roomster Scout has higher ground clearance than the standard models, and is larger inside than the Yeti... though you have to accept its "looks" from the outside... if you have kids they'll love the rear seats which are higher than the front ones, and the panoramic roof, if fitted...

I had a Roomie and it's ride height was well suited to lanes as yo describe. I think the Yeti is over-priced - consider a CRV - British built it has far more to commend it increased ride height, part time 4x4, cheapish tax - decent tyres an good economy - It has just came No 1 in Warranty Direct's reliability table. I found the Roomie too narrow for my taste, Honda is a very good all round compromise, good at most things. Tyres on the Roomie were too fashionably wide and low for snow...

Most of the softroader 4WD have 2wd that brings in the rear wheels if the fronts are slipping eg. CRV as above.
I think you'll find the biggest MPG penalty for these vehicles is largely due to their frontal area. The presence of 4WD just makes it a wee bit worse!
In saying that, I find the driving environment and comfort afforded by the CRV + Forester to outweigh their fuel economy compared with a normal estate car. Additionally you'll probably be surprised that the CRV/Forester size vehicles are actually smaller on the road than large hatch based estates as much of their added volume come through extra height and more upright seating.
Never driven Yeti/Roomster so can't compare them - I can certainly recommend the CRV and Forester, but avoid 18" wheels if you are doing a fair bit of lane driving.
Also VW are struggling to shunt Tiguans it would appear - maybe some good discounts to be had (at least that's how it looked pre-Xmas).

The "old" CRV (CDTI) manages 43 mpg on mixed driving - tank range is between 460 and 500 miles depending on driving style - Roomie wasn't much better around 45 mpg....but it did encourage more "spirited" driving.

Ok Guys thanks for all above
I kinda liked the older style CRV, cant warm to the newer one with the horrible( to my eyes) styled rear end.
Subaru= expensive for adolosents to drive
the Yeti is good on the low insurance
Though prob just get an Octavia
