I have noticed a number of people saying that they get their ABS to operate, even in snow.
My current car, a'98 Almera GTi, has ABS, I've had it for 3 years, and I have had it come in twice, once to test it, the second when I had to brake hard, to avoid someone.
So why do other people manage to have it come on?

Mine operated for the first time ever because one wheel locked on braking and the other three didn't-small patch of ice.

I deliberately get it to operate - as a method of establishing just how much grip there is.

Allways on a road with no traffic and at low speed.

In this recent weather mine comes on most of the time when I brake but I have the most useless tyres any car could have (and they are fitted as standard).

Had the ABS cut in more on the Volvo in the last four days than in the two years I've owned the car! Many of the side roads in this area until today's rain were almost impossible to stand up on, much less drive on. And I am not making that up! :-(

If one has a vehicle with ABS can it be turned off for say icy conditions or off roading. I don't just mean a factory fitted switch I mean pulling a fuse or a wire or something, cos I will at some point upgrade the Jimny and a newer model may have it fitted and I can think of nothing worse than ABS off road.

Best regards........MD

I used to think similarly but driving for a whole week in very icy conditions, I've changed my view. I've found that the benefit of being able to maintain steering inputs under braking on ice (deliberately harsh braking on quiet icy back-roads), outweigh any dis-advantages I falsely believed ABS had. I don't think I'd want to be without it now. Having said that, it's suprising how much grip and braking is possible even on surfaces that are difficult to stand up on.

Here in the Pennine foothills my i30, supplied with Hungarian manufactured Hankook tyres has performed very well in the few inches of fresh and packed snow, the traction control and stability only cutting in when deliberately provoked - the ABS did operate a few times on slippery surfaces but that's what I expected in the conditions.

Compared to a Zephyr 6 I had in a snowy sixties winter on crossplies it had amazing grip and traction.
