Been around for over 100 years, unlikely they would have lasted if they wern't producing good products. If it meets the spec for your car does it matter what name is on the can?

Didn't Morris's make Silkolene ? I used it in the old car for years and it cured smoking.
IIRC it was in a red tin with picture of Concorde on it. Could't get it locally in the end.

Yay, use it all the time in my older cars. Shell Helix fully synth in the Subaru.

Morris's of Shrewsbury?

Superb stuff. It used to come out of the sump of my BXs feeling oilier than when it went in.

Have a look here...some good oils for older cars as well.
Silkolene still on market, but not Morris's

Confusing message above. Morris's are evidently still on the market. And also Silkolene(Part of Fuchs IIRC).

Sorry...meant Silkolene was not Morris's'

I've delivered to the Morris lubricants plant in Shrewsbury before, seems to me to be a long-standing, very professional outfit with a real pride in their history and their products. There's a customer sales counter with every type of oil imaginable displayed on shelves and in cabinets, from specialist historic vehicle oils through race oils to marine and industrial machinery lubricants. There is also a good display of how their packaging and design have evolved over the years.

Not many factories make for such an interesting and fascinating experience for visiting drivers or instil such confidence in their abilities and products IMO. To answer the OP's question: "Yay".

That sounds really interesting, and my sister lives in Shrewsbury so I can see an afternoon out developing!

Can you just pop in?

I have used the Multivis Semi Syn 10/40 since the early 1980s and have complete confidence in it. When I first used that oil in a VW Passat, I got a 5% improvement in fuel consumption and have continued to use it in various vehicles since then.
It is certainly fit for the purpose when an oil of that spec is required.

Have used Morris' in Harleys for 20 years. Highly recommended.

Just out of interest; another poster mentioned Silkolene. I've also used their stuff and it's good, but did you know it's re-cycled oil? When they had the plant at Belper, Derbyshire I used to deliver there, they had tankers going all round the midlands collecting old oil which they re-processed there. Don't know if Fuchs still do that; their plant's at Stoke-on-Trent IIRC.

Silkolene bike oils are excellent and reasonably priced too. The ZZR has a sumpful of their 10W/40 semi synth brew right now.
Used Fuchs semi in the first service I did on the Volvo. Engine was still sweet and smooth at change time, and is still sweet and smooth 6,000 miles later (now on Mobil Super S) so it seemed to do the job.
I'm not brand loyal with oils. I go for spec/grade first, then a "known" brand name, and the rest comes down to the deal available at the time. Have used Fuchs, Silkolene, Mobil, Total and Motul in the past few years in various cars and not a bad word to say about any of them. The only bad experience I've ever had was with Castrol GPS in the ZZR which made the cam chain tick on cold starts. As soon as I dropped the oil out and replaced it with Silkolene, it shut up and has never returned.

Cheers

By the style of the "trade counter" I would guess you probably can, yes.
morris brand oils ...yay or nay - Pugugly
You can buy it on line or phone them and ask for a local stockist. Their Offices are pretty near Shrewsbury Railway Station IIRC. Its a well kn. I know their local rep they are a busy national company.

Another + vote for Morris's oils.
I used to use them exclusively when I had my Lada/Proton/used car outlet.
Excellent service and never ever had a complaint from my customers.

I think most branded oils are much of a muchness these days. I have used Morris stuff in the past on my own stuff and we also currently use Morris oil at work on our fleet of trucks with no problems.

I used Morris semi-synth to run a BX 16 valve and an XM diesel 15 years ago. Both went beyond 150K.

My BX 16 valve had 142k on the clock when we parted. Very underated car. Wish I had it back in some ways.

Danger of restarting the petrol thread hear but I'll jump in.

EXCLUDING PREMIUM BRANDS YES I SAID EXCLUDING PREMIUM BRANDS (even though for example the higher octane rating in premium petrol is a waste of money for 99% of cars).

Oil is oil and petrol is petrol and diesel is diesel. Just buy the cheapest.
morris brand oils ...yay or nay - John F
Oil is oil and petrol is petrol and diesel is diesel. Just buy the cheapest.

.....and get less mileage.

Beer is beer and cornflakes are cornflakes.....you pays your money and gets your taste.
morris brand oils ...yay or nay - Niallster
Severely in danger of restarting the petrol thread here but how can you tell if you get less (or more) mileage? To be a fair comparison you would have to do EXACTLY the same journey with two different brands of petrol. Have you ever done EXACTLY the same journey ever? Even if its the same route one extra touch on the brake pedal for whatever reason and its not the same.

The major brands have had every attempt to claim their petrol gives extra mileage banned by the Adversing Authority as they can't prove it even in laboratory conditions.

(and once again I am excluding premium brands I said I am excluding premium brands these may give extra millage but they cost more so its not really a saving is it?)
morris brand oils ...yay or nay - Andrew-T

Depends whether you are counting £ or CO2. Most people ignore the CO2 as it doesn't come directly from their wallets.

Well Andrew I am doing my bit by roasting a beef joint for dinner.

Thats one less evil cow expanding the hole in the Ozone layer with its methane output.

Also got a call in to the UEA to tell them they can 'adjust' their calculations for one less cow.

Every little helps...

We have a cow in the oven too, SWMBO is too old for a bun. :-)

Really? Oil most definitely is not just oil. You'll completely destroy emissions management systems in a modern diesel car if you don't keep with low-mid SAPS oils. Your advice might have been reasonable in 1990. But now now.

How about in 2009, when this was a current post?

11 years later and Morris Oils are still up there with the best, meeting the required specs of the latest vehicles, highly respected in the commercial vehicle field.

I've used Morris oils myself, like a poster above i have no particular brand loyalty and buy in 20 litre packs whatever reputable brand is offering a good deal, just picked up some well priced Fuchs oils for the petrol engines in our small family fleet, and some well reputed Castol Diesel specific stuff for my Toyota Diesel.
