92 3.0 Auto transmission thump and clunk - joconey
Hi,

This relates to a thumping & clunking when the transmission changes up (but doesn't happen all the time). The tranny also sometimes fails to shift up when cold. The fluid has been topped up and, although the problem has died down a bit, it hasn't disappeared.

Looking for clues and also a good independent service centre near Ashfor in Kent.

Cheers

Check the connections on the vacuum pipes which lead from the inlet manifold to the modulator valve which you'll find towards the front of the gearbox on the passenger side. Leaks elsewhere in the vacuum system which are fed from the same port on the manifold will also reduce the vacuum level at the gearbox leading to hard shifts.

While under the car, check that the engine mountings and gearbox mountings are in good condition, and if the undertray hasn't been off for a while, also check the condition of the exhaust bracket which is fastened to the rear of the gearbox.

When cold, there's a shift inhibitor to allow the catalyst to warm up properly - it's normal and correct behaviour for this car.
