john...theres 3 ways...
1. buy a pair of c shapped radio removal handles from halford for a few pounds.
2. 8< snip, as per recent intolerance terms introduced pop into halfords and ask the radio installation team to remove the radio for you....
3. cut the ends of a wire coat hanger, insert into the 4 holes on the outter edge of the radio, then move the handles outwards...(towards the driver and passenger door)
at the same time pull the radio towards yourself...
job done...
(same radio as my old escort, puma, etc...)
(my subaru radio was bolted in,,,how very japanese)
(my wifes volvo v40 radio had built in handles that spring into the facia, takes seconds to remove the radio if your that way inclined..)
Paul..

3. works fine. That's what I ended up doing.

Just make sure the "prongs" on your homebrew tool are of equal length, and as you push them in, you'll feel the catches "give" as they push back. Then as Paul says, push the "handles" away from each other and pull out the radio.

Try a search with "radio tool" in the Car section of Ebay.
There are lots of pictures of these tools. Under £2.
