I have a Vauxhall Carlton CDi Estate which produces a very large thump when going over road humps, my Garage says the shocks are OK - but I still get a very loud noise - any ideas?

Rear suspension bushes? loose spare wheel?!!

Yes, loose spare wheel would be the first thing I'd check. Not sure about Carltons, but Cavaliers have a threaded bolt sticking up in the middle of the spare wheel well. There's supposed to be a plastic disc which screws onto this, tightens down onto the wheel, and stops it from moving around. If that's missing, the spare could be banging around in its well, which is oversized in order to accommodate the toolkit.

Look at the rear suspension arm rubber mountings. Look like big doughnuts!
