Dear all,
Mrs apm and I have settled on a Volvo S60 as our next car. I looked at three today, just considering options. All are D5's, with SE spec.
1) Silver with light grey leather, auto, 33k, 55 plate. This one's an ex-company car, felt a little tired and unloved, despite low miles. Up for £9k, but the stingy trade in offer means not the bargain we first thought it was.
2) Dark blue with beige leather & wood trim, auto, 42k, 05 plate. Felt really lovely inside and well-cared for. Up for £9950, but good trade in means lower cost to change than above. Problem on test-drive- heard a whooshing noise from the engine on accelerating. Might have been my imagination, but felt a little down on power compared to others I have driven.
3) Metallic burgundy, black leather, manual, 25k, 07 plate. This one was lovely, really rapid and smooth. I'd have it like a shot, except that we really wanted an auto and light interior. Up for £13k, but very generous trade in.
We can afford all of the above. My favourite was 2), but I'm concerned about that noise- any ideas what it might be (but for the noise, I would have bought it there and then)? There is a warranty, but I'd rather not buy a car with a fault. I do like the manual (3), but we had kind of decided we wanted an auto, and it would be a bit of a disappointment to not have it. The first just didn't feel as nice as 2), although I'm sure we'd grow to love it. Very rapid.
Opinions valued! Just to say we have decided that we want an S60, so much as I'm sure there are BR'ers who feel there are better cars in the sector, I'd prefer just to get opinions about these!
Many thanks in advance,
Alex.

Maybe a little more on the engine type (naturally aspirated, turbo, petrol or diesel) might help?

Must read more carefully!

Hi apm,
I just test drove an 03 V70 D5 today (163 not your 185 engine) but I didn't notice any kind of engine noise (except for the usual gruff kind of "zoom-zoom" out of the corners). If it was loud enough to cause you concern, I think I would want to have it diagnosed before committing to it. That said, an excellent choice of chariot - the beige interior is nice, a great change from the usual offering of black with a hint of darkness. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Go with your instincts and choose number 2) of the 3. Beige interior always classier than black or elephant-ar$e grey.
Whooshing noise might just be the turbo spooling-up? Or the window not closed properly :-)
Envious. still miss my '03 2.0T... Far better all-rounder than the V50 I replaced it with.

You can hear the turbo working on all D5 engines to a greater or lesser extent. Some seem louder than others but it doesn't indicate anything wrong.
