Car has done about 16k now and tyres are around or below 3mm so need to get them all changed. They are low profile and, even though I've never kerbed them, still seem to have worn on the outer n/s edges. Anyway, the alloys are new and mint so, in the north surrey area, any ideas???

When the Mazda dealer changed the alloys under warranty they did a good job and they were spot less, I had a puncture repair done by KandP in Ewell and they did a good job as well, so trying those places.

Any experiances with mobile fitters? When I get the tyres done, is it worth asking the fitter to take extra care cos I know most don't care about their wheels! Black Circles seem to be the best so far, anyone had them delivered and then paid someone to fit them?

Happy New Year.

When you get your new tyres, have the tracking checked. It sounds as if it is out of track with the outer edges wearing.

It is definitely a good idea to ask the fitters to take good care when fitting to alloys, I like to watch what goes on.

Since I've never kerbed them I was thinking it was due to all these mini roundabouts. Whenever I've asked a garage to correct tracking its always ended in tears with them making a hash of it. I've had the car from new.

Thanks for your comments.

I also think speed humps cause this - in my experience anyway.

I think speed cushions shred the edges of tyres, as does going round corners too quickly which is effortless in modern cars. For tyres, this does it for me.... "The Korean ultra-high performance tyre manufacturer Kumho presented with the scent tyres another sensational new development. The Kumho KH 31 is in the four fragrances orange blossom, rosemary, lavender and jasmine. The tyres are not well known to smell is one thing that is not only with a car and thicknesses much hp under the hood can specify, is the other thing. How about times with the opposite sex instead of roses, with beguiling smells of jasmine or orange on points. Let simply Kumho KH 31 and assemble a balance of fresh scent."

I have had the same problem as you. I reckon that if I took my car to 10 tyre dealers and had the tracking checked, I would have 10 different results.

The cheapest place for tyres is often a local independent. Get the lowest price off the internet and ring round.

I prefer premium tyre brands, such as Michelin, Continental, Pirelli and Goodyear, for the same reason that I prefer to fly on a Boeing or Airbus, rather than an Illushion or Andropov(sp?)

Try www.event-tyres.co.uk.

Get the size of your tyre and go on to their website. They'll offer a selection from economy through to the more expensive.

They will come to your home or work and are recommended by a number of people on several sites for price and service.

I used them a month ago - first class and an extremely good price.

Costco take some beating on price especially if you go when they have special offer on which they do every few months.

Not sure what size your on but my Mazda6 on 205/55 VR16 Michelin Primacy HP cost £258 fitted and balanced earlier this year for four.

I've used Costco about four times with different cars and they do a good job, balance right and no damage to wheels.

Some people don't like Michelin tyres but if your on Bridgestone now I'm sure you will notice a significant improvement.

I replaced the 4 tyres on mine (also 205/55 R16's) with Avon ZZ3's from e-tyres and paid about £67/tyre (or £268 all in) and they were fitted whilst I was at work.

I can't compare the new tyres to the old as I'd only had the car a week. But the previous owner paid £100 more than that to replace the tyres previously.

I can't comment on the damage to the alloys really, other than they weren't appreciably damaged when I got the car and when the tyres were fitted, no new damage occurred.

cheers

Exactly the same on my 6, and my fronts were changed at 16k. I don't have the low profiles though.

Many tyre specialists are happy to fit tyres supplied by the customer, although their charges vary considerably.

>>When I get the tyres done, is it worth asking the fitter to take extra care cos I know most don't care about their wheels!

Yes, and avoid air guns if possible.

Hi Clk, did you have shoulder wear on the fronts?

Ta for the info.

I used BlackCircles the other month to get the tyres changed on SWMBO car, they were showing the best price online and used their fitting service where they deliver the tyres to a fitting ctr near to you. After chatting to the fitting ctr I used he said they were often cheaper then Blackcircles, so a week or so later when I needed 2 new tyres on my car, I gave them a call direct and sure enough they beat the blackcircles price by £4 per tyre, so went back there.

Moral of the story is find the best price you can online and then ring independents local to you and see what price they can offer.

Also, used to use etyres, which offer very good service imho and come to you. But were quite a bit more expensive last time I needed tyres.

I had very similar with my local indy, many of whom have got their act together and are now very good at competing with the web sellers.
I am now on excellent terms with them and to make their life easier often drop the wheels off for changing whilst i'm doing some brake maintenance or similar on the cars, being helpful with costs works both ways.

Some of the large chain fast fit places however still seem to be living in rip off Britain.

I've just paid £267 for four Pirelli P6000s for the Volvo (205/55 R16 91V) from Blackcircles, including fitting, valve and balance by an established local tyre shop. I need to get tracking done at the same time, as the existing front Dunlops are completely bald across their inner edges despite having about 3mm left across the centre and outer edges.
Never used this service before, but will report after the fitting which I have requested for next Wednesday AM. This is quite a departure for a longstanding Micheldever user and recommender.
