Light comes on (wil not turn off at switch) intermittently , stays on until ignition turn off. When ignition is turned on at first switch turns on/off light!.Skoda dealer Feels it is not important!.

Get the ABS fault-codes read; that will tell you why.

Did this start happening after a battery change?

No...no battery change.Just out of the blue!. Never seems to happen on short trips..only after driving about 10 miles!.

Octa,
Just to give you a little insite as to what is happening with the light. At ignition switch on, the system will do a self test. If all the circuits check out, then the light will go out. As the vehicle is being driven the computor will be looking at the data being returned to it, and ensure that it is within set tolorances. If one circut for whatever reson goes out of limits, then the system will be shut down, and the lamp put on. You then stop, turn the ignition off/on, and if it passes the test, the lamp will be off untill the fault reoccures. The circuit that the computer did not like however should be loged in the memory as a code. As screwloose has, as always correctly, stated, get the ARS/ABS system code read to see in what area the fault lies.
I would disagree with the dealer that this is not important. This is a major safety feature. When the lamp is on, it is NOT working!

Tony@tooting and Screwloose........
Thanks for replies. One point i must make......Active ASR is indicated by the warning light and it may be switched off manually , in normal circumstances. Why will the switch only function at ignition off/on? Thanks again.

Not quite right Octa. ASR (anti-skid reduction) is on by default (lamp off). Pressing the ASR button switches the system off (lamp on). A fault is indicated when the lamp is permanently on.

There is no dedicated ASR module. It works using the ABS and Engine Controllers in conjunction with each other. They communicate with each other bi-directionally. If the ABS module detects any one wheel rotating faster than the others, and the brake pedal has not been applied then it signals the engine module which limits the engine speed to 2,000rpm. This will allow the speed of the spinning wheel to reduce to the same speed as the others, hence recovering from the skid. Some engine faults will also cause the ASR system to malfunction such as incorrect pump/ignition timing.

Possible faults include wheel sensors, brake light switch, MAF sensor, vehicle speed sensor. You scan test should point you in the right direction, but sadly far too many people take what the scantool says as gospel rather than understanding what it actually means.

tony@tooting,

I have a similar problem to octa's on my Skoda Octavia 1 - 01 1.8 4x4, namely, an intermittent fault on the ABS/ESP warning lights. (The manual tells me that the ESP warning light comes on if the ABS fails.) The come on together - typically after I have travelled for some time or distance. They go out when I switch off the ignition and then come back on again after a much shorter interval of time. If repeated, this time interval gets shorter and shorter. If the car is not driven again for some while, say until the next day, the time/distance interval reverts to the much longer period. Neither the ABS, nor the 4-wheel drive, function when these lights are on.

According to the garage I have taken it to, the system code says the fault lies in the longitudinal yawl sensor. This has been replaced (along with the G-sensor with which it is fitted), but the fault remained. Since then the associated wiring has been tested and new connectors fitted, and the system 're-adapted' by a Skoda dealer. But the fault remains, and the system code is still saying the problem is with the yawl sensor! The garage (not a Skoda dealer) has run out of ideas.

Could you please advise.

I have a 51 plate 4x4 octavia estate that has the ABS ans ESP warning lights on intermitently. on startup they're, drive around a bit and they stay on, switch off and re start they're off and stay off for the rest of the day. Next morning they're on again.

I've been told that this is an ABS controller fault (having already had the lateral and longtitudinal deceleration sensors changed) and that the part is £800+. I have also see an advert by s******* offering reconditioned ABS controllers for £200-£300.

Does anyone know if the diagnosis is correct?

Does anyone know s******* and how good they are etc?

Also, does anyone do the same as s******* in or around Cheshire?

Thanks
