KIA Cee'd vs Hyundai i30 - Alanovich
Working on the basis that these are similar cars, aimed at similar markets at similar prices, I've been considering both as prospective purchases in the coming years. This has lead me to actively look out for examples on the roads.

Now, I don't get out of town much and live in Reading so this observation is strictly local, however I have noticed that of the two models, there are far more examples of the i30 around my way, with the Cee'd being an extremely rare sight.

This I find odd for five reasons: a) the Cee'd has a longer warranty; b) there is a KIA dealer in Reading but no Hyundai dealer in the town; c) the Cee'd is more established in the market; d) the Cee'd is better looking IMHO; and e) the Cee'd has a wider range of body options (e.g. 3/5 doors and an estate version).

There surely can't be much to pick between them in terms of reliability, build quality and depreciation.

I had been leaning towards the KIA quite strongly, but noticing the apparent relative popularity of the i30 I'm reconsidering.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to why there should be this apparent imbalance in popularity, and has anyone else noticed the same?

Is it down to KIA being simply a less well-thought-of badge? Can't see it making much difference to be honest, but you never know.

Would be interested to hear any opinions.

Look into my eyes, not around them - that Alfa has a soul that neither of these will have, now grab a train ticket - the car's parked a ten minute walk from the Railway Station.

Lol! If ever I were to buy such an Alfa again (and, if Mrs A is watching I will one day, oh yes I will, despite the horror stories of my former and greatly lamented Alfa 33s), then I would surely also only have it for a bit of fun and not rely on it to take the kiddes to school and get to work every day, for which one of the two bore-mobiles I'm considering might do the job, cheaply and efficiently.

I see more Cee'ds than i30s on road!

Reading has lots of companies, people commute there from far away places. So, i30s you see there may be from elsewhere.

Hyundai and Kia are part of same parent company. It always make sense if your dealer is near to your home.

Ultimately it is just your personal choice. They both are good cars.

If it's cheap you're looking at, then a new car isn't the answer, whether it's a Kia or a Hyundai or any other brand.

Cheap cars are those where someone else has paid for the privilege of running it in for you. (This is also known as depreciation).

numbers on the road will be distorted by fleets

if a car isnt selling to the public, the maker will often increase the discount to fleets, leading to more on the road

the question isnt really how many you see on the road, but how many are bought and paid for by private individuals out of their own money

fleets will buy any old car if the discount is big enough

If people didn't buy new, where would second hand bargains come from?

I mean cheap in the context of new cars. I'm aware of the value to be had second hand, I often take advantage of this myself, however, sometimes, when flush, I might just buy new or nearly new because I want to. Doesn't mean I have to buy expensive, over priced new though.

Quite true. It's very much in the interests of folks like me that some people spend masses of money by buying new cars and leaving others to pick up lightly-used s/h ones for a fraction of the new price.

If that's what you want to do, it's your money and your choice. I intended my comment as a friendly "are you sure you want to do this", and I hope that's how it came across.

Buy the KIA CEED strongly recommended by Honest John but wait for the more green engine due very shortly. The dash on the Kia is much better than the Hyundai. However my only gripe against this car is the very poor and dangerous very rogh finish on the front door top corner edge. The current Honda Jazz has the same fault and I damaged my face on it could have lost an eye.

Oh no, not this again! You seem to be the only person in the world to have this particular problem.

I'm still trying to work out what he means.

I had an Accent, which had the same type of door surround as the i30. If he means what I think he means, these cars have a relatively thin metal surround around the window itself, coloured black, as opposed to something like a Primera where the metal is much thicker, and matches the rest of the car.

Yes, one comes across as being of higher quality than the other, but I fail to see any safety problem with the Hyundai approach!
