Started the car this morning from cold (outside temp 18C) and noticed the oil pressure light took about 1 second after the engine started to go out. Drove about ten miles parked up for about 30 minutes came back to warm engine and started again, again about 1 second for the oil pressure light to go out.
The car has covered less than 44k miles from new, been serviced by Volvo from new and since we bought it at 25k miles had oil changes every 6k miles - always using the recommended 5/30 fully synthetic oil.
Is this the start of a sludging issue or should I start by looking at the oil pressure switch ?

Hgmac, i've got the same car ( 05 reg ), i dont think its a problem, but to be on the safe side change the oil and use a genuine volvo filter ( because of the return valve ).

S. i've not heard of sludging with synthetic oils.

Thanks prm.
My neighbour has a V70 auto with the same engine, roughly same age with 106k kms on the clock. Just tested his car and it takes slightly longer than mine for the OP light to go out.
My car is due an oil and filter change so will see what happens after that.

Changed the oil and filter this weekend. Made absolutely no difference. Still taking about one second after start up for the oil pressure light to go off. I'm currently putting this down to thin oil and high ambient temps (>25C).

My D5 does the same, infact I would say that often it can be at least a couple of seconds before the oil pressure light goes out and it's running on 0w40.
I first thought that an oil NR Valve wasn't working but it appears as though it's a "feature". The filter itself is just the paper element type.

my d5 takes at least 2/3 seconds to go out, my l200 pick up takes longer again i have been in the garage game for many years and one second is nothing to worry about, the oil light switch is set at mayby 8/10 psi before the light goes out and that pressure will take time to build up as well as any delay in processing the information. I need some help with my d5 cutting out when going along! The joys of motoring.

Keep us posted on what the problem is portacabin.

I had this exactly this issue with my 54-reg V70 D5 when I bought it as a Volvo used car 3 years ago. The service manager was excellent and, having eliminated the pressure switch and the oil pump itself as the cause of the problem, eventually fitted a new engine at Volvo's expense. However, this didn't solve the problem! The matter was then reported to Volvo Sweden and, ultimately, their answer was that this is a characteristic of the digital network which runs most of the "electrics" in the car. Basically, the oil pressure is ok, the switch is made, but there's a perceptible delay (mine was about a second) before the light on the dash goes off. Apparently the instrument panel design was changed at some point before 54-reg and the later design has a slightly longer delay than the earlier one. I've since done 50K miles on the replacement engine and the oil light still behaves exactly as it's always done!
Obviously I can't be sure that this is the problem in the OP's case but hopefully it's of some help.
Regards
Mike

Thanks to all above for replies and peace of mind if nothing else.
To cure the smoke on startup I found if I take out the air filter and give it a good clean or replace the element the smoking goes away. I usually have to do this at 6k intervals between services.
