Brake fluid type / general fluid change discussion - cheddar
Hello,

I am going to change the Clio brake fluid when I change the discs and pads (I know I got the new discs and pads a couple of months ago, just haven't had time!) The Clio handbook does not quote fluid spec, nor does Haynes from what I can see, the only info I have is the lid of the master cyl which says DOT3 or DOT4.

Any thoughts?

I thought about doing the Mondeo brake fluid at the same time (DOT4 Ford spec ESD-M6C-57-A) though the dealer only charges £39.99 inc, its a no brainer, booked in for next week.

Regards.

Cheddar - Have you changed them before? Renault seem to use a very good thread locking compound on the screws securing the disks. Be prepared to drill them out

Go for the more modern, higher spec DOT4. The Ford stuff should be fine for the Clio.

DOT3 is bargain basement 1960's spec.

I don't get it, why pay to have the Mondeo done at the dealer and then do the Clio at home?
Edited to answer my own question: because you'll have the Clio wheels off already for the discs...

Its probably called iron oxide isnt it?

If only it was. Just pre warning you about a potential issue.

Replaced the discs and pads today, no problems though the old discs needed a wack to get them off the hubs, always worry about the wheel bearings in such circumstances.

RF, the disc securing screws came out a doddle, as did the caliper mounting bolts, not bad for 9 years old.

All seems fine, I will change the fluid another time.

Book it into the Ford place :-)

I did the brake fluid on my cars last year, using Comma brand (Dot 4).
I'm disappointed to see how quickly the fluid's gone dark (compared to the unchanged clutch fluid in an adjacent reservoir).
I used about a litre on each car, '53 Almera, '53 MX5, '98 Micra, '94 Kia Pride.

BW, I might get the Clio fluid changed rather than do it myself, for £40 it is a bit of a no-brainer really though I have bought some fluid.

BT, Comma stuff is top draw, they are one of these companies whose brand does not live up its products as opposed to products not living up to the brand. Accordingly I reckon you would have noticed the colour change with any brand fluid.
