How do you recognize a failing clutch or gearbox, my car is jumping in any gearing almost as though it is changing down or up at any time, difficult to describe unless you are in car.

found buried deep in an elderly thread - moved to its own for a bit more attention and drop down menu thingy implemented. Guess taken a model year.

Hi,

How can you tell if the problem is a gearbox or clutch. In my car in any gear at any speed on any incline, up down or flat the car seems to feel like it is about to stall then goes again. Similar to being in 5th and changing down to third, the car throws you forward then recovers and is ok. I think it s the clutch but how do I know that?

It doesn't sound like a clutch fault. Sounds more like fuel/ignition problem.

Does car idle ok? or do revs go up and down? is it only when cold/hot/warming up etc?

petrol/diesel?
