2003 - 1.4 petrol using a lot of oil. - annaeloise
Hello,
I have a problem with my oil in my VW Golf reg 53.
For the past year or so the oil light comes on about every 1000-2000 miles.
Every time I check the oil, it has gone down to low, so I am filling it back up to the max point. I am using the correct oil as I checked with VW garage, and even 2 months after a oil change from the VW service, the light came on. I have taken the car to two seperate garages asking if there is a leak, however nothing can be found, but it is costing me loads in oil (about £20 a bottle!) and its making me angry-no one will help me!Has anyone had a simular experience??

The real criterion is how many miles per pint does the car use, so it would be nice if you could quantify the problem by telling us how much oil the car uses and over what mileage. To do this you'd have to always check the oil under the same conditions, for example in the morning after the engine has been stationary overnight.

That sounds excessive.

I think VW say up to 750ml per 1000 miles is 'acceptable' - We had a row with the SEAT dealer over that because I certainly dont agree. We sold the car.

What engine is it? What mileage has it done?

Is this petrol or diesel? no leaks so is it burning oil any blue smoke? have you had a compression test in the visits to the garage?

What colour is the oil light you refer to? Is it red or yellow?

This could be turbo oil seals.

from personal experience :-( I wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised to find its a 2.0 litre petrol, 8 valve - ALH or similar. In urban driving, the old bora used nearly as much oil as petrol, and checking the oil every week was absolutlely compulsory

Not the VW lump where the injectors were orientated so they washed all the oil off the cylinder bores and led to bad bore wear.

I am not familiar with VWs. OP refers to an oil warning light coming on regularly. Would this be a level warning ie top up oil, or a pressure warning, in which case I suggest the engine's problems may soon be over!

My son turned up yesterday in his 06 reg MB M320 diesel. Will you check the oil please dad, the light is on. It took 4 litres of Mobil 1, I had to go and get some more from Costco, I bought some wine and beer so no saving there then.
The car had done 6000 miles since the last service, it seems to me it is using rather alot.
The Focus TDCI uses no oil and the Passat TDI uses half a litre in 6000 miles.

I keep telling him off for neglecting his cars, but he doesn't take any notice!

Check for blue smoke, it is most likely being burnt in the cylinders. A compression test is vital.

My old Fiesta used 1 litre of oil per 200 miles my current one uses virtualy nothing in that distance. Done 1500 since the last change and its still on max :).

Don't let a garage fob you off with that amount of oil burning is normal because its not.

My daughter's 1.8 petrol Golf seems to drink oil. It doesn't smoke and has just passed an MoT test though. Whenever I look the oil level is well down. No one else ever seems to check.

It appears that annaeloise's car has a 4-year old engine which, for a reason other than leakage, is using oil. It also appears (perhaps through a lack of experience of these matters) she's somewhat shocked by the amount it's using and is appealing for advice as to what she should do about it. What can one say except that she should get a reputable garage, preferably one familiar with VW engines, to look at it?

He's not daft if he gets Dad to stump up for 4 litres of Mobil 1..

hello,
Its a 1400 petrol engine and it uses about 1 litre of oil every 2000 miles or so, it used to be less frequent, but it it getting more often, and VW are still stating there is no problem>>

You'll probabaly find mention somewhere in the handbook that the engine can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles. That is why VW are saying there isn't a problem.

How many miles has your car done?

You mentioned earlier that a light comes on. Is this the low oil pressure light, or low oil level light? If the former, then everytime that light comes on, you're damaging the engine.

Hello, the car has done about 35K miles and it is the yellow, low oil warning light that comes on. today VW said again that in the handbook it states that 1 litre of longlife oil can last just for 1000 miles????

What octane of petrol are you running it on? Normal or one of the premium brands?
2003 - Using a lot of oil. - annaeloise
I just use normal petrol, and I have to use 'longlife' oil which is fully synthetic as the car is on VW longlife service and has had long life oil since new.

Crikey, I bet they didn't mention that in any of the sales literature!

Hi Anna, Is there a thicker oil option in the handbook?

Many thanks for all your replies. I ended up taking the car to audi and had a service, where they changed the oil from longlife, to a thicker option-which means I now have to have a service every year rather than every two-but must be cheaper than speanding £20 on oil every few months. audi did all the compression tests ETC but could not find anything wrong.

A lot can go wrong in 2 years anyway. At least with yearly servicing if there is something untoward, it will be noticed earlier rather than later. Here's hoping the oil they've changed over to solves the problem. Remember to report back whether it does or not.

My wife has a 1.4 petrol golf 2000 model which she has had from new I change the oil and filter every 5000 to 6000 miles even though it gives the option of variable computer controlled service intervals. It uses a little oil between sevices but not very much. At a guess it might need 0.5 litre between services.
As a principle I believe in shorter service intervals.
I currently also have an omega with over 120,000 miles which has enjoyed the same regime.
I would be careful not to run the engine oil so low that the oil warning light comes on.

I find that my Octavia 1.416V(2001 now 88k) only uses a little oil on a long runs but uses quite a bit when pottered around town. Didn't require topping up on at return trip to the Italian lakes at about 80k running at very (for a poor little 1.4) high speeds through Germany. It seems to have a very similar engine to the Golf.
