OK am being smug here but am very pleased to see that the garage doing my Mondeo service/MOT have advised that my tyres (Dunlop SP2000E) are registering a tread depth of 6mm. They've now done 26,000 miles since they were put on and look good for another few miles yet.
I should say that I'm not a crawler when driving but neither do I accelerate or brake hard.
|
I would take tyre tread depths reported by a garage with a pinch of salt.
They don't do it half the time as I found out with my last car when it was serviced and MOT'd by the main dealer last October.
According to them I had 6mm all round. The fronts were due for replacement as they were only just above the wear indicators.
|
The last set on the front of the Mondeo (Falken ZE512) lasted 20k, but they didn't wear evenly. No fault could be found with the car's geometry.
The current Eagle NCT 5's have only been on there for 5,000 miles, but still look new.
Have never changed the rears in the 35,000+ miles I've done in the car, although I suspect they won't make it to the next MOT. They were well used when I bought the car though.

That would take away the smugness! However, for most garages this is an potentially an opportunity to flog a few tyres which I would n't have thought they would pass up too often.
PS: Thread title should, of course, read "Tyre Wear........" {It does now, but only the topmost post - DD}

Current Hankooks have only done 5k, the rears look new, and the fronts will do at least another 10k. Worst I've ever had were a pair of Pirelli P3000s that only managed 12k on the front before hitting the wear indicators.
|
I suspect the current F1's will last me about 10-15k on the back.

May I add that the Pirellis were considerably more expensive than the Hankooks too.

Bridgestone Potenzas on my Legacy Spec B are down to 3mm now after 18k. Time to get new ones I think.
|
My indy was breaking/scrapping a 405 with nearly new boots as I bought mine. £70 for all four corners, and 21,500 miles later the fronts are at 3.5 mm, so need changing before winter. Rears on about 7mm I'd say. I really can't complain at the miles, or the price...

I had the tyres replaced on my daughters car the other day and the tyre depot managed to measure them (they really did use a tread depth gauge) at 3MM even though they were clearly worn flush with the tread-wear indicators.
Mileage must mainly be about the way you drive - going back a bit, I used to work for a company that purchased its company cars and had about 50 Cavaliers - the first FWD ones in about 1982, I think. As they were their own, they were very sensitive about maint costs, and it was frequently pointed out who was getting through tyres.
Some guys were having fronts every 10K miles, and rears at about 30K, where others wouldn't need tyres for the whole life of the car (used to dispose of them at around 65K miles).

With the same frequency as I change my car, approximately.
|
my gtv 3.0 uses front tyres at about 13k miles and the 2.0tdci c-max does about 12k between new tyres. i must have a heavy foot on the accelerator.
|
Had Puncture today and was advised that although tyres were road legal as they were over 5 years old they should be replaced.
I only do about 3000 mp year as I have a co car also.
Is this usual or just "business drumming"
THANKS
|
>>Usual or business drumming?
Both. You will be told this regularly. But honestly... if it were the case, then establishments selling second hand tyres would be unable to obtain insurance.
My brother is a chemical engineer on a plant making antioxidants for tyres. He confirms they do go off, but won't go so far as making our mother change her tyres that are over five years old. Make of that what you will.
|
I tend to manage about 30-35K out of a set of 4 by normal driving and rotating front to back at service times.

over 5 years old they should be replaced.
I've seen everything from 5 to 10 yrs quoted. Look for signs of cracking, especially in the tread and the inside walls.
|
I've got though the rear tyres on a Caterham 7 in under a thousand miles.
I used to change them on the scooby every 5k, and at £100 a corner that's not cheap.
I reckon I'll get about 10-15k from the fronts on the Mondeo, the rear's will last forever

I read often, only post occasionally

I'm always surprised how long peoples tyres last for. I've just changed my fronts after 16000 miles.

I've no doubt a rich GTi-turbo-nutter will be along shortly and claim to regularly wear them out faster tan that!
