Ok my first post here I have been a lurker for a wee whils so Hi!
We have a Saab 95 estate which I really like it is very comfortable and spacious but we are only getting 25mpg from it and the petrol cost is killing our finances. So we have decided to sell it and get something else. We have two small children so need something with a decent amount of space and something which will give us good fuel economy. The saab has lots of extras like AC, air con etc preferably I would like similar extras.
many thanks

It's a bit of a wide open field, but you might find a decent diesel does the trick - the right one will use half the fuel of your SAAB with no sacrifices in performance.
The VW PD diesel is (still) the most efficient engine on the market although not the smoothest. A Skoda fitted with the 1.9 litre version of this engine might do your job. Choose a less popular model if you want a better car for your £5k - and haggle - hard.

What's your annual mileage?

my annual mileage would be about 15k

I agree - see what sort of Skoda Octavia diesel estate you can get for your budget. It's as capacious as a VW Passat with the same oily bits, but you'll get a newer one. I'd have thought it may be almost as capacious as your Saab.
Alternative - Ford Mondeo TDCI - bigger still and there may be more of them around. Have a look on Autotrader.

Gramfin, I always hated this when people did this to me but here goes.....
If you do 15k miles a year at 25mpg, thats 600 gallons at £4.31 per gallon
= £2587
If you switch car to a car doing, say 45 mpg, then that will be 333 gallons
= £1436, so a saving of approx £1100.
Now if you are happy with every aspect of the Saab, apart from the fuel consumption, is it worth changing the car? Will your new car depreciate faster than the Saab will at this stage in its life? If so, then that eats into the £1100 extra you are making?
If you are willing to pay £5k, then that would actually keep your Saab going for another 4 years and you still might not be any worse off if you see what I mean?
However, of course, if there are other reasons for changing etc then just ignore this!
It has been said on this forum many a time, if you actually looked into the cost of running a car deeply, or certainly changing it regularly, then many of us would be cheaper taking taxis!!

Bobby I see what you are saying. If I am saving 1k per year say then that works out 4k over the next 4 years, surely that makes it worth it? No? I am not great at maths lol! Its purely financial as I like the saab.
|
But Gramfin you are spending an extra 5k on a new car as well?

Bought one last week for £4.5K - 2004/04 LX estate - 108,000 miles (eek!). Just come back tonight from 1,500 miles in a week in France - 46 (true) mpg over two and a half fills of Leclerc's finest . Quite a lot of car for the money, rattles a bit both warm and cold like a leggy diesel should but very comfortable and IMO exceptionally smooth cruiser at 130 kph. No toys but BIG as in BIG inside and out, comfy, everything works fine and the major (ie most expensive of 3) service next week is £180 at an independent. Not everyone's cup of tea I'll admit, but suits me.
