VaG PD diesels - why are only some noisy - Roly93
Has anyone got any theories as to why there is such a difference in external noisyness (at tickover) of the good old VaG 1.9 & 2.0 PD diesels. Some seem to be 'common-rail' quiet whilst other seem quite clattery. Having owned 2 cars with this engine and observed many others I can't figure it out. Is it fuel, hard driving, soft driving or just out and out mileage that quietens them ?

A good question - I've often wondered about this too.

I have a quiet one (1.9) which goes well and burns almost no oil at 28k miles. It was a rep mobile (first owned by VAG) and I suspect was well thrashed and had its first oil change (long-life) at about 20k miles. So, a hard life to start with - I'll be much kinder to it.

On another thread, someone else made the point that VAG engines could be difficult to run in properly as they were almost all factory filled with fully synthetic oil to meet the requirements of long life servicing. This may mean that piston rings and some other components may not bed properly. I thought this was probably a very valid observation.

Maybe the thrashed engines in early life end up as the ones which don't burn oil and are quiet?

659.

My 1.4 PD engines not that noisy bearing in mind its a 3 cyl and has only used a tiny bit of oil. Mind you, it has only done 2200 miles

Going off at a bit of a tangent, in the back of my mind I believe that the thrashed/abused engines are the quiet ones. Years ago I bought a nearly new Ford Escort 1.4 CVH, and I was never happy with how this sounded at idle. Mainly because, the company I worked for had 2 of the identical model Escorts on the same F plate,as pool cars. Needless to say they were abused at every opportunity and the engine bay looked like a disaster area, whereas mine was pristine in every way. However the engines in both of these cars idled smoothly and quietly with just the swish of the alternator belt to be heard.

I had a PD 1.9 (105) and it was pretty much thrashed from 17 miles, used a bit of oil but sounded fine, got a 1.9 Tid saab now that has been thrashed for 54000 miles and with the aircon on it sounds like its about to cut out and i.ve put a bag full of rocks in the engine, uses no oil at all though.

My old man always goes on about how i drive but he drives like a saint and his volvo S40 diesel he has had from new has just dumped all its oil over the M5 when the turbo went, same sort of mileage, guess it doesnt make much difference how you drive them exept....

He gets 55mpg i get 35mpg!

My 115PS PD is on 150,000 miles, and when warm is quite quiet at idle. Uses about 400 ml of oil over 10,000 miles, which I dont consider excessive.

I changed the oil and filter after 1500 miles from new, not knowing the initial fill was fully synthetic! (I was used to doing this with new vehicles since 1980, as I though it would give the engine a better chance of longer life by removing swarf and other contaminants in there from the manufacturing process).

(I've always used the PD spec oil)

If a Passat is missing its undertray, it sounds more 'dieselly' outside...

I test drove a 1.9PD Leon II demonstrator that sounded really loud and unrefined from inside the cabin that had only done about 400 miles. When queried with the sales manager he said they get quieter with age.

However, the same 1.9PD in the Leon II that we purchased has been very quiet from new.

Strange.
