Focus TDCi Fuel system failure. - boumph
Last week, whilst driving up the M5 my 02 Focus's engine stopped. I learnt later that the fuel system had failed, with all subsequent consequences. Apparantly the tank was no longer delivering fuel to the pump. The tank was at least a quarter full. The garage poured a further gallon in to the tank and was then successful in hand priming the system. The estimate to repair the fuel system is in excess of £2,000. As the car has now done 205,000 miles I have made the decision to right it off. Any suggestions as to why there was no fuel delivery to the pump would be gratefully received. (The fuel filter was clear).

Did the car run OK after the extra fuel as added and it was primed? If so it sounds like the problem is the lift pump which is not expensive, otherwise the high pressure pump could have failed though £2000 is a bit pricey, perhaps shop around, despite its mileage if otherwise in good order it must be worth £2-3k so £1000 fixing it is not too bad.

No the car wouldn't start, they couldn't get enough pressure in the high pressure pump.
The high pressure pump, 4 injectors and all the ancillary bits and pieces at Ford's prices came to about £1600, the rest was labour.

Take it to a diesel specialist for a proper diagnosis. This bunch sounds like amateur hour!

It could be something cheap and simple; but nobody competent has looked at it yet.

how do you check a broken pump?presumably an expensive strip down.i have already been offered £500 by a local garage.i dont want to put good money into bad.the car would have to carry on doing 1200 miles per week after repair.how long would it last before something else broka?l

It sounds like they have *assumed* the pump has broken up and deposited debris into the system. Have they actually confirmed that tho?

If the HP pump needs a rebuild I can put you in touch with a firm in Swansea who rebuilt the pump on my 9-3 Saab for half the cost of a maker's replacement, and with a 12 month warranty.

How are they measuring the pressure from the HP pump? It is not unheard of for the rail pressure sensors to die - if the sensor tells the ECU the pressure is too low (or is sending no signal at all), then it won't open the injectors and the engine won't run. Cam sensors also go on these and will prevent the engine from running. Either of these is a relatively cheap fix. I also presume they have checked the low pressure lift pump in the tank becuase if thats not working there will be no fuel to the HP pump.

As has been said before, you really need to get the car into a Delphi diesel specialist who will have the appropriate equipment to test the pump and other components before writing them off.

Probably in the Yellow pages as "Lucas/Cav/Rotodiesel".
