i was going through loughborough yesterday afternoon and parked up just after the alan moss roundabout was a white van with 2 cameras pointing out the back, i drove on toward the layby and a cop was pulling vehicles over , upon inspection i noticed vans, one had DVLA another had fuel testing written on the side and for good measure two cops on 2x1,s (motorbikes) to catch the chavs who would panic and do a nigel mansell toward derby, it must cost 1000s to set something like that up

But if it takes uninsured drivers/untaxed drivers/disqual's off the road, I'll happily pay the extra tax incurred.

quite often on things like that, they'll use officers who are training or have just been trained, so you're not losing people unnecessarily from more important roles

and/or........some shift patterns have the odd 'non core' day e.g. 2 days out of a 5 week period you'd be shown working a day shift as opposed to an early, late or night shift.......so that you'd be available to staff up other non urgent needs.....such as that stated... or assist Customs, trading standards, do warrants... etc,etc

& there was probably people from the DSSS or whatever they call themselves, this week, checking out theose that might well be claiming 'benefit', whilst working!

I've no objections to this type of high profile enfocement.

They were doing exactly the same thing at the city end of Speke Boulevard last week (main southern approach to Liverpool - A561?)

I think it was VED/insurance checking also.

I'm all for it, like an earlier post, no tax usually comes hand in hand with no insurance.

Second to buying serious military kit (Typhoons, AH-64s, the odd Astute class Submarine and Aircraft Carrier) this is exactly how my tax money should be spent, third is roads followed by hospitals and schools. I wonder if one of the major parties would allow you to nominate where your tax money goes ? Now that might be an election winner.

Yep it is to serve the purpose of getting the uninsured, unlicenced drivers and unroadworthy vehicles from our streets. As you drive past the white van with the cameras it reads your number plate and checks it immediately with the various databases such as the DVLA, VOSA, insurance database, police national computer etc. If you haven't got any insurance cover registered to that vehicle, if it is out of MOT, if it is registered to a driver who doesn't have a valid licence or even if it has been flagged on the police national computer for any other reason it will instantly flag the vehicle up and it will be stopped up the road and checked out.

If everything is in order then you are allowed on your way, if not then your vehicle will be taken off you in the form of a Section 165 Seizure, where it will be towed away and stored for around 7 days. If you want your vehicle back then it will cost you £105 plus £12 per day storage but you must get your documentation in order and produce it at the police station before you can claim back the vehicle. If you don't come to claim your vehicle within the allotted time frame it is destroyed instead.

What Act would that be s. 165 of, then?

What Act would that be s. 165 of then?

Police powers of seizure of vehicles being driven without a driving licence or insurance; retention and disposal of vehicles seized under powers provided by the RTA 1988, s 165A p 353

RTA 1988, s 165A, a new section inserted by SOCPA 2005, s 152 provides a power of seizure in respect of vehicles reasonably suspected of being, or having been, driven by persons who are unlicensed or uninsured. Unless impracticable, persons must be warned of intended seizure If a licence (or counterpart) or insurance documentation is not immediately produced Similar powers are provided where a person has failed to stop his vehicle for sufficient time for such enquiries to be made and there are reasonable grounds for believing that such a contravention has occurred. A power of entry is given, using force if necessary, into premises other than a private dwelling house where such a vehicle is believed to be. After a failure to stop, the power of seizure is valid for 24 hours.

The Road Traffic Act 1988 (Retention and Disposal of Seized Motor Vehicles) Regulations 2005, make provision for the retention, safe keeping and disposal by the police or a person authorised by them, of vehicles seized under s 165A of the RTA 1988.

A seizure notice must be given unless the circumstances make it impracticable. The vehicles are to be retained by authorised persons who must issue a further seizure notice specifying what will occur if the instructions contained in the notice are not complied with, including requirements to produce the relevant documents. Seized vehicles may not be disposed of within a period of 14 days or a date specified in the notice. Where a vehicle is sold the proceeds may be paid to a person establishing ownership within a period of one year.

I used to see this a lot in Windsor (onthe high speed road from the M4) and Maidenhead (on the high speed road to the M4). I guess a high speed road gives the police ample opportunity to safely pull over a suspect. IMO it is high visibility and gives a good impression of the police. So from that point of view I am for it.

But I do wonder about the effectiveness. It is said that uninsured drivers cause a disproportionate number of accidents and routinely ignore speed cameras. And of course if one drives into you you cannot claim for your costs. I'm not sure how much good seizing the car is. After all a car can be bought for peanuts, and the saving on insurance would easily cover the cost of a replacement. So perhaps this is in reality of no real use at all?

even a complete shed costs you something......... most oiks don't bother with anything as inconvenient as paying for court fines........and you've got to commit a really serious crime to get any chance of prison these days........so in my book it's a form of fining them, which is fine by me, even if it's got costs involved........and then there's the inconvenience of them getting home from where they've been stopped

They have been having a big purge on it today in and around Derby. In particular they have been concentrating in the vicinity of Costco, which is near to Pride Park for those of you who know Derby.

Cops never seem to 'purge ' the travellers though do they?
Go for the easy meat, don't want to get hurt too much, or be accused of racial anything.
Just an observation, I live near Loughborough BTW, a place to avoid IMHO.

The travellers will know all the laws inside out and be laughing at the police.
