how difficult is it to buy a new car !!! - injection doc
Today my wife & I drove round 4 dealers to get a price on hers & to get a replacement hopefully within weeks only to find that 3 out of 4 shook their heads in dismay at the 22 month old part exchange & to be told that any model of car in any colour that I wanted to order would be September now as manufactures have stopped stock vast quantieties of cars! this is for one of the most popular makes of cars built! 1 dealer I went to offered at least 1000 more in PX without any pushing & could offer the exact model spec & colour I wanted & deliver in 2-4 weeks. 3 out of 4 didn't even know that the manufacture offered a 50/50 purchase deal that saved a fortune over there normal finance & they didn't even know it exsisted.
I don't ever want to hear a salesman winge again I don't sympathise

Injection doc, what type of car is it you are after?

I am looking at possibly getting a used CRV. One dealer 2 mins from y home has offeres me £7250 trade in on a £14495 car.

Another dealer who I went ot 1 hour away has offered me £6500 against the same car but it is costed at £14995.

Second dealer has phoned me 3 times asking if I am still interested as "there is still room for negotiation". I told him how out the park he was compared to dealer one's offer. He said well come back down and we can sit and discuss and negotiate further! I told him that unless he gave me some improved offer on the phone then I wasn't going to drive past my local dealer to get to him!

Many years ago you went into a dealer and negotiated with one salesman on all aspects of your purchase. Now the salepersons are not allowed to sneeze without consulting their manager/Business manager etc!

I have telephoned 5 or 6 Nissan dealers this week to try and buy a Navara and ALL of them did not have a Sales person available to speak to me and onloy one called me back 2 days later!. I knew exactly what I wanted and if any of their prices were in the ballpark I expected I would have bought there and then. So in the end I did the business with an internet company and they could not have been more helpful and only wanted a £200 deposit.

These Nissan dealers sales departments need a wake up call.

"without consulting their manager/Business manager etc!"

A bluff. See the film "Fargo". Salesman says he must consult boss on a deal. Goes into B
boss's office and they both watch a ball game on TV, saying nothing about cars. Salesman goes back to customer and says something like, "Gee, I never thought he would give way, but he's prepared to offer..." etc. etc. Last time I bought a car I mentioned this to the salesman, when he said he had to consult his manager and he was most hurt by the suggestion.

Many years ago I saw a couple standing by an older Honda outside a Honda dealer. It was a car I wanted for my mother. I went up to them and they were selling the car - it belonged to a recently deceased relative. I said I wanted to buy it but they wanted to sell the car to the dealership, who had offered a price over the phone without seeing the car.

Anyway they were waiting for a salesman to come out from chatting to his manager. He came out for two minutes and I said that I wanted to buy it and would immediately give him £1000 on top of what he bought it in at, as long as he serviced the car and gave me a warranty. What would that cost him ? £250? A half hour went by and the saleman did not return. The couple gave me their address and we did a private deal to everyones benefit except the dealer.

It would have been the easist £750 the salesman would have made all year. Fools

how difficult is it to buy a new car !!! - hxj

I've never had any problem in buying a new car.

The technique is -

Research

1. Read up and decide exactly what you want;

2. Go online - get it priced up;

Action

3. Start with the local dealer and work outwards

4. Walk in - go straight up to a salesman and say - "I want this model, in this colour, with these options - I can buy today and have my credit card with me to leave a deposit - What's your best price?"

5. Wait for the quote; (After they've picked themselves up off the floor)

6. Suck your teeth and say "I can get it at this price online - what's your best price"

7. If they don't beat match or get close - then say thank you and walk.

Start at 4 with the next dealer.

Car 1 this took 2 dealers; Dealer 1 said no - then rang back within 24 hours to say they could.

Car 2 this took 3 dealers;

Car 3 this took 2 dealers.

No problems.

well hxj, thats exactly what I have done & I know exactly what car I want & the price but there all telling me completely different stories about being able to supply although I asume they all have access to the same computer! I have a 1.4 tdci fiesta which was just under 12k new in june 05 with lots of extras & 23 months later offering 5k but one of the dealers had an 04 3dr TDCI on there forcourt for 6995! with a lot more miles on it!. ours is under 20k. All we wanted to buy was the 1.6 16v tdci fiesta but order one now & collect in September as thats as soon as they can deliver! & accept a lower value on our PX as well!
Unable to even have a first choice in colour iether.I can go and buy a french car tomorrow a lot cheaper but I have to say the last one was a disaster and spent more time at the peugeot dealer! & if you so much as leaned against the car it aquired yet another dent!. I have to say the ford has been exceptional and only have to report one plastic handle on a rear seat break when new otherwise its been faultess.
how difficult is it to buy a new car !!! - Pat L
I found the dealers not really wanting to talk seriously about price. I used drivetehdeal.com and got a great price and my car was ordered through a dealer about an hour away. I'll use my local dealer (5mins away) for servicing and fitting new engines!

I've said it before on here but the new car buying experience with dealers is not the enjoyable experience it should be. The attitude of the salesmen often beggars belief.

well hxj, thats exactly what I have done ..

a) in which case, why can't you go and buy off the internet? (i.e. point 2 of hxj's method: 2. Go online - get it priced up )

b) >> I have to say the ford has been exceptional ... >>
in which case, why not stick with it.

I know from bitter experience that promised delivery times won't always be met.

I had a nightmare with promised deliveries of our C4, telling one garage to get stuffed after we had signed and they'd promised delivery only for them to fail to have the car, but offer an alternative for another £1500. Second garage, aware of my anger at the first, tried a similar trick. A colleague ended up canceling his order for a C1 with another garage after the exact same palaver. We both wanted a particular colour, none of the dealers had the car but were happy to take our money.

No help I'm afraid, but most of these salespeople have lost sight of the customer and see only bags of money to plunder.

tvm,
amongst a whinge about eveerything from the colour choice, part-exchange being lower than forecourt price, etc., etc., the o.p. also said
All we wanted to buy was the 1.6 16v tdci fiesta but order one now & collect in September >>

so he seems quite happy to wait until september for a colour of his chosing on a car which seems to be in much demand according to him.

so what exactly is he whingeing on about?
how difficult is it to buy a new car !!! - injection doc
Well dalglish I aint whingeing, I don't want to wait till september just to buy a fiesta! I might expect it with some fancy motor. I would like one in weeks rather than months but one of the points I was making was the negative attitude of the sales people involved & lack of enthusiasm or motivation . If I have to wait till sept it means paying for another years r/tax ( although only £35!) two front tyres & a 2nd year service! once I have paid for that I might as well keep for another year. The forecourt price of the said car was 2k for twice the milage & a year older! that was my point. I don't expect to get forcourt price but would only expect a 1k mark up. I found one dealer selling an identical model with same milage & year for 7250k so why 5k for mine & full price for new one especially as the dealers remark was our's was mint & unmarked! not even a single door ding! & the last point is I cannot even order the colour of our choice I have to list 3!. my last one I had to accept as silver & not sea grey as ordered!
I have now found it such an unpleasent experience once again that I am going to keep & blow the dealers I will have a good holiday instead.

many dealers will try and sell you what they have got (or got stuck with) rather than what you want.

You have to make sure they know that you are in a position to buy, and are willing to do so (sounds like you have) and then when they say they cant do it ask them to supply you with ford customer service number because you would like to be put in touch with a dealer who has got the car you want or to hear from Ford themselves how long it will take to get a simple car!

Good luck though!

It's still worth checking the internet brokers for cancelled orders etc. You may just get the colour/spec you want or something very close for a good price.

thankyou yorkiebar sounds like a good idea as relying on the salesman using his computer is hit or miss. I have to say even I have been suprised at the different car selection available using different dealers when they all use the same ford web site. Does sound a little like its get rid of what we can
Thanks regards Doc

Agree with yorkiebar.

injection doc, have you test driven the 1.6TDCi Fiesta by any chance ?
Have you considered a nearly new one instead of new or is colour spec a vital component as part of the deal ?

There is one available via the link below, they will negotiate a price to exchange deal with you.

I simply don't understand the OP's problem. HXJ seems to have the right idea (my technique also) - why do people find it
a hassle to negotiate? Why do people moan & whinge when they have to look around & use their bonce & a bit of slychology?

Sheeess,.. I've always found car buying a fun & exciting experience - deal making is all part of the fun!
So what if a salesperson doesn't know their stuff! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! They're not trying to steal from you - they're just
trying to get the best deal for themselves - nothing wrong with that.,..

A friend waited 3 months for delivery on an 06 plate TDCi fiesta because he wanted a 'blue one'. I told him he was crazy to wait so long for delivery of such a commonplace car. He didn't even order any options.
The irony of it was, on its way to the dealers, transporter crashed, new car written off. He was told he could have another 'blue one' but he'd have to wait another 3 months! So he ended up, 6 weeks later, with a silver one after all!
Unbelievable...it's a wonder Ford sell any new cars.
Whereas when I bought my Seat last year, the dealer was happy to scoure the length and bredth of the country to source one, at close to internet price, in order to find the colour I wanted.
It seems to me it's all about how much they want the sale at the time you happen to go in...
how difficult is it to buy a new car !!! - bimmer-driver
The SEAT dealer I just picked my new Ibiza up from couldn't have been nicer. Everything was extremely efficient, there wasn't any pressure, they immediately offered a test drive and best of all they gave me a cracking deal. Thats why when I come to change my new car in 3/4 years I shall definitely be going back.
On the other hand my bosses experience of trying to buy a new Audi was shocking. He visited 3 dealers and each one made him feel like they would be doing him a favour selling him a car, not the other way round. They never rang him back, didn't offer test drives and the part-ex prices were insults( and that was on a mint 3 year old Audi!). Needless to say hes now driving a brand new BMW 325i.

The excellent experience I had with my Peugeot dealer is documented on this forum. I also have to say that I was considering a a BMW and the dealer was polite, made follow up telephone calls and generally worked for my business. When I didn't buy, their customer services rang and asked how had I been treated and could they have done anything better.

The sad thing is , good customer service is such a rarity these days, we have to note it on an internet forum!

I also use HXJs method, always works for me. If the dealer can't fulfill your requirements, go to one that can. There will always be one out there. Apart from maybe Porsche dealers. My 'massive' discount on an in-stock unregistered Boxster 4 years ago was ... wait for it ... a free umbrella!

Hi Nomag," its a wonder Fords sell any cars these day's" Well with all the advice on how easy it would be to buy a car if I used the internet!!! well for those who suggested the internet its now got worse! cancelled order with dealer & ordered on internet with a delivery date of June & guess what now they say build is delayed & can't have car till at least september they want to drop price of part exchange. All I wanted was an Oecean blue 1.6tdci style climate 5 dr. hardly rocket science, no wonder fords are struggling, they deserve it. If any one can locate one must be above speck! loads of 3drs but no good with family please let me know.I think the supplier new all along & just gave me a date out the hat to get an order!

Priced a pre-reg pickup on the Mitsubishi site. Found a couple of dealers offering what I wanted (including leather) at a price which was fine. Contacted the dealer who had one (2 hrs south of border) and sent a similar request to Glasgow dealer who didn't have any listed. Got a call from dealer in south who said, yes we have one, that price is only indicative, we need additional £250 for paint choice, on a vehicle which only came with metallic as a no cost option???? and also it would be an additional £500 for leather.
Said thanks very much, I'll keep it in mind.

Received a call from the Glasgow dealer two hours later, and yes, they had one, no cost for colour choice, and for leather - could they call me back? Phone call an hour later, and yes, I could have the leather at the price I had said I was willing to pay.

Easiest purchase I made, and am I happy? You bet. Would I give this dealer repeat trade? Funnily enough, the pickup was a replacement for a Suzuki I had purchased previously from the same group.

Keep a calm head, know what you want, be realistic in where you expect the dealer to meet you on price and there is no reason why you shouldn't get what you want, and a reasonable p/x. After all, if they can't meet your needs, there are lots of other people happy to take your money.
