My Astra 1.8 sxi which has disc brakes all round has a terrible brake squeal which is more pronounced at slow speeds and light braking. I can physically see the pads through the alloy wheels and there appears to be plenty of wear left on each pad. The squeal doesnt happen all the time but more often than not. The braking efficiency does not seem effected. I have given them a blast with the hosepipe thinking there might have been a build up of dust. Any suggestiions greatfully received

You could try taking pads out & putting copper grease on the metal edges where they sit in the calipers making sure you don't get any on pad material or disc. I suspect that the disc's may of become glazed. You could try fitting GM pad kits front & rear & that should fix it

could it be a stone trapped in the brake lining, or the anti-rattle shims have perished?

Had a similar problem on my 1.8 SXi Astra G a few years back when it was <1 year old. More of a groaning noise than a squeal, but certainly a low-speed problem. Fixed under warranty by the dealer, who said it was a known problem with the back brakes. Sorry, not sure exactly what he did but it worked. So, your local dealer is worth a try.

the problem will be that the pads probably glazed over, because pads arent made from asbestos any more which is very heat resistant, the new material is more prone to glazing because of heat. i would recommend removing all pads and usin a bit of emery paper remove the shine from the pad surface it should be a matt finish. then refit with copper grease on the edge of the pads so they move freely in the carrier. give that a go mate.

Consider a different brand of pads if needed. Softer compund may help; but may wear out quicker. Not quick enough toi be a problem in that respect though.

Many thanks for the replies, i will certainly bear them all in mind. Probably start by removing them to see if anything is obvious.

I had an identical problem ealier in the year with my Astra SRi. A local mechanic told me it was common on the Astra especially at the rear. He removed all the pads and but fresh copper grease on them and plenty of it. 30 minutes work. The problem has gone and has not reoccured.
I often use a power washer on the car and I was told that this is probably what has caused the squeal as I will have washed off all the old lubrication, I now dont use this on the alloys.
